CHAPTER TEN
PEOPLE SWARMED OUTSIDE the fences, all yelling under their cheap masks in protest. They all wanted to get to safety as much as anyone in times like these, but they couldn't, and wouldn't.
The woman clutched her son tightly in her arms as she pushed herself forward towards the front. She squeezed between the tall unknown shoulders, being mishandled and almost trampled by the enormes crowd, but she was to determined to get to the front and she thankfully did.
An armed man stepped in front of her, clad in a protective suit—the other civilians could only dream of having—and a gun in his grasp.
Just like with anyone else, he was about to toss the woman back to the others as if she was useless, because to them they all where. But when she put a surrendering hand up his way, and she placed her son down, he stopped his actions.
Instead he waved over his shoulder in her and the little boy's direction, capturing the attention of another suited man who strode towards them instantly.
The woman knew she didn't have much time, so she bent down in front of her son, her face filled with sadness and grief. The boy didn't know what was going on, but he knew it couldn't be anything good as he watched her unclasp the necklace around her neck.
She smiled sadly at him, taking a quick look behind his shoulder before hurriedly placing the silver medallion in his hold. "Remember, I love you."
The boy didn't have a chance to speak back as he was grabbed from behind and tossed over a shoulder. He yelled out towards his mother, but she made no action to step forward, instead watching as he was dragged off.
A tear ran down his cheek as he clutched the silver jewelry between his small palm, keeping track on the woman's figure who got smaller and smaller, in the distance.
