Letting Jack have the meltdown he needs
CW: crying
—
Jack was frustrated, everyone in his life seemed temporary and he wasn't sure how to feel, was it his fault? Had he driven away every last person? He'd even managed to push Niki away, a long argument between the two over Niki's assistance in helping Dream escape prison. "They're my friends" a saying that kept repeating itself in his head, was he not her friend anymore. He could feel his head start to drift and he wasn't going to let Niki see that so he left.
He stormed through the streets of the Dream smp, trying his best to fight off a headspace because being mad was better than being small, Jack reasoned. And when Jack thought it couldn't get any worse, it did.
First, it started raining, not the soft sprinkle that was tolerable, but a downpour that soaks you from head to toe. Then strolling down the same path came Wilbur and even though they were on good terms, Jack desperately wanted to be left alone. "Hello Jack" Wil greeted, "where are you off to?" He questioned.
"Nowhere," Jack said harshly, not bothering to stop.
"Well, I would quite like to see where this nowhere is, I'll have to join you" Wilbur joked, turning to follow Jack.
Jack only huffed slightly when Wil realized something was up, "go away" Jack bit out, speeding up in an attempt to get away as his head was getting foggier.
"Manifold!" He called out only to be ignored once again, "What's your deal?," Wil asked.
Finally, Jack stopped "why do you care" he grumbled.
"You're in a lovely mood" Wilbur replied sarcastically.
And with that Jack snapped, "of course, I'm not in a good mood Wil! Nobody cares about me and now I'm cold and wet!"
Wil stumbled backward a little at the sudden anger, "what do you mean nobody, I care abou-"
The younger interrupted, "no- don't, don't lie, you're lying" Jack sobbed, plummeting headfirst into little space with no chance of surfacing quickly.
Immediately, Wilbur stepped in, sure he didn't exactly know what was going on but Jack was spiraling. "Jack, bud let's get out of the rain," Wil said softly, reaching out to grab Jack's hand.
"N-no! Don' tou-ch me, go a-way," Jack hiccuped.
Wilbur immediately pulled his hands back, "Okay- okay I won't touch." Wil said. "I want you to get out of the rain though," he explained, "why don't we go into the community house for a minute until you calm down." He offered, heading towards the door.
"No! Don't wanna g-go!" Jack shouted
"Only for a minute, just until you calm down," Wilbur said going through the door.
Jack reluctantly followed, "wanna go h-ome" he gasped.
The older was slowly beginning to piece together his behavior, between his heightened emotions and slurred speech there were only a few choices to choose from. "I know bub, you can go home soon I just need you to take a deep breath for me, can you do that?" Wil asked, Jack gave an unsure whine. "I know you can, breathe in for four" he instructed.
It took a few tries before Jack was able to make it to four, But after a while he found a steady pattern, calm enough to breathe on his own. "Can I give you a hug?" Wilbur asked, he stepped forward once Jack nodded, wrapping his arms snuggly around the younger. Wilbur was content staying with Jack for as long as he needed, quietly hushing his cries. "Do you want to tell me what's wrong little one?"
The little shook his head, "wanna go home p'ease" he sniffled, clutching onto Wilbur's drenched coat.
"Alright bud, we can head that way" Wil agreed, the pair left the house and headed back towards the path.
Jack lead the way to his house, thankfully not too far from where they were. Once they arrived Wil was quick to get Jack changed out of his wet clothes, "here bud, this'll be much nicer" Wil said handing him some warm clothing he'd found in one of the drawers. Wilbur figured he'd pull some spare clothes from his ender chest, so once Jack was set he went to do just that.
The brunette waited on the couch patiently for Jack to finish changing, watching the little shuffle over to him once he was done. "'m sorry Wilby" Jack mumbled staring down at his feet.
"What for?" The older asked, genuinely curious as he pulled Jack into his lap.
"Was mean 'n loud" the boy muttered timidly, voice wavering slightly.
Wil nodded, "there's no need to apologize you had a rough day is all" he spoke softly, "everybody has rough days sometimes," he told Jack.
"Even you?" The boy asked.
The taller nodded again, "oh especially me, sometimes I make mistakes or people say mean things or sometimes I'm just in a bad mood" Wil explained. "Did something like that happen to you today?" He questioned.
Jack took a deep breath as he nodded, "Eve'ybody keeps leavin' me an it ma'e me feel yucky" he explained with a pout.
"Sweet boy" Wilbur cooed, "the next time you feel like that, no matter when you come find me and we can talk about it" Wil suggested.
A comfortable silence fell over the pair, both content with sitting there, letting the events from the day finally weigh in.
Eventually, Jack had fallen asleep, cradled closely to Wilbur's chest. When Wilbur took notice he stood up, carrying Jack to his bed and setting him down which earned a whine from the little. "'tay" Jack mumbled tiredly, reaching out for Wil.
"Alright bub," Wilbur whispered, climbing into bed next to Jack. The boy curled up to him once again, quickly going back to sleep.
When Jack woke up later, still fuzzy, arms wrapped around Wilbur's middle as the older slept, maybe Wilbur wasn't lying earlier when he said he cared.
