But the person outside the window did.
You awoke to Lucía slamming the window shut as rain poured in.
"It's been raining all morning," she walked, throwing herself dramatically on the bed. "The floor by the window is all wet!" She opened her eyes, seeming to register you sitting there, and threw herself at you. You smiled, hugging her tightly back.
"Everyone thought you were gone for good," she whispered into your hair, sniffling. "I thought I lost my best friend forever."
You laughed, pulling away to smile at her.
"Yeah, you should have known you can't get rid of me for long. A year max."
She giggled tearfully, wiping her eyes.
"I have so much to tell you. A lot has happened while you were gone."
You nodded, looking around.
"Broke up with Carlos, I assume?"
She scowled.
"That rotten man-whore developed a crush on Mirabel Madrigal after figuring out she could save lives. I should have known he wasn't worth it." Her pretty green eyes flickered back to you, reminding you of Camilo.
"Yeah," you said absentmindedly. "I thought I told you he wasn't a good one."
"But you and Camilo, huh?" she teased, scooting closer beside you. "He was a wreck after you died. Ew. That sounds so weird to say." She wrinkled her nose distastefully.
You laughed, your face reddening.
"Why didn't you stay there? You said you'd explain everything in the morning. It's morning now."
"Right... I had a nightmare last night. Where... my papa was trying to kill me. But he wasn't my papa, I mean- he was but he wasn't. He was Camilo. It doesn't sound that scary when I say it that was, but it felt very... real." You sighed, wondering how to say the rest. "I woke up and the family ran in. Abuela got mad at me for waking everyone up because I screamed."
"Hag," Lucía muttered. "You saved her grandson."
You held in a snicker, continuing.
"I felt like I was intruding, so I slipped out. Abuela was probably glad."
"That's why it's raining!" Lucía cried. "Aww, Pepa's worried about you." She grinned, her eyes glinting, reminding you so much of Camilo that it hurt. You loved him, but... the dream had unsettled you. A lot. "She already knows you'll be her future daughter-in-law."
You gasped, pushing her backwards on the bed as she cackled.
"Lucía! You can't just be saying that..." A horrifying realization came over you. "Delores can hear you! She can't hear me, but she can hear you just fine!"
She shrugged, sighing.
"Then she knows you're here, and has probably already told somebody. Camilo's probably sprinting here right now." True to Lucía's word, somebody rapped on the door and you quickly tried to cool your red face. "Come on," she said, pulling you to your feet as you struggled to comb your fingers through your tangled hair.
"Don't! I look-"
Lucía opened the front door, cutting you off and revealing a frantic Camilo, with Mirabel behind him. She scowled at the latter, walking you off and leaving you to your unwelcome reunion.
"(Y/N)!" Camilo shouted, pulling you into a tight embrace with your arms pinned to your sides. You tensed up, trying your best to relax, but he pulled away, sensing your discomfort. "What did I do?" he asked softly as you quietly pulled the door shut behind you.
"Nothing, I'm just... still unsettled from the dream last night, ok?"
"We're really sorry about that," Mirabel cut in, stepping forward. "How Abuela acted, I mean. Camilo told me all about it last night when we were looking for you. We couldn't see where we were because of the rain. Pepa was furious at Abuela and worried about you."
You suddenly grew extremely guilty.
"You shouldn't have gone outside. I was fine, I just needed a break."
"A break is ok," Camilo said, gently taking your hand. "Just tell us next time. You scared me, amor."
Your face grew red, and you tried to stomp out the butterflies in your stomach.
"Sorry. I didn't mean to upset anyone."
Mirabel raced forward, hugging you.
"You're completely fine. Sorry for being so controlling and hunting you down," she said with a laugh.
"That's all right," you said, trying to muster up a smile but failing. "Let's go back to Casita and let everyone know I'm fine."
Camilo held an umbrella above your head as Mirabel trotted ahead, not minding the rain.
"You haven't smiled since you came back to life," Camilo whispered in your ear, catching you off guard and making you jump slightly. His voice was low, trying to keep it down so Delores wouldn't hear. "And you're acting scared of me. What's going on? I just want to make you happy again."
You glanced over at him, startled to see tears in his eyes as you both came to a stop.
"Oh, Camilo," you mumbled, pulling him into a tight hug. You stepped back a moment later, a smile finally growing on your face when you realized he was blushing. You him on the nose, right over his freckles. "I-"
Before you could say anything, somebody camping flying through the street towards you, grabbing your arm and wrenching you away from Camilo.
"AH-"
"Shut up," the person growled, slapping a soaked hand over your mouth. The rain poured all around you, obscuring your vision and disorienting you. You could hardly struggle.
Finally, the person slammed you against the wall in a side alley where you were protected from the rain. You took a deep breath, finally turning to look at their face.
As soon as you did, your eyes widened.
"Mama?"
