"Are you sure about this one?" Sakiko asked Baji, pointing at a line on his notebook.
Baji frowned and looked at what she was showing him. He was sure it was right. Or he felt like it was right. But obviously, if Sakiko pointed it out, it meant it wasn't right.
"I... think...?" Baji said, unsure.
"The multiplication always comes first when there's no parenthesis," Sakiko said.
Baji sighed, quite frustrated. He knew he had to do the multiplication first yet the one percent of uncertainty pushed him not to do it. He should have listened to his instinct. Sometimes, he felt like math and school, in general, were harder than winning a fight.
Baji was working hard not to fail his year again. The last time he had to tell his mom he wasn't passing, she was mad and cried. Baji was not that bad with studies but as he spent all his time fighting, he was behind the others. So Sakiko offered to tutor him to help him pass his year. That was why she was at his house, helping him with his homework. She would give him additional lessons on what he had learned in class or reexplain things to him. At first, Baji's mom wanted him to go to late classes but it would have been expensive. Sakiko proposed to help for free. She really didn't mind if it was to help a friend. Baji was grateful, especially since he understood things better if Sakiko explains to him. As she was his friend, she knew what analogy to use to help him. And Baji didn't feel embarrassed to ask her questions. Having Sakiko as a tutor was way better than late classes. Plus, someone, Chifuyu would come to tutor him too. Baji would never admit it out loud, but he was very grateful to them.
"Ugh... I'm gonna fail that year again...," Baji grunted, slouching.
"Don't say that. You're doing well so far," Sakiko said. She stretched a bit then yawned.
"Say it if I'm boring you, Miss A+ student," Baji rolled his eyes.
"I'm just a bit tired," Sakiko chuckled.
Now that she said that, Baji noticed the unusual paleness of her face. Her eyes were not as bright and her eyelids closed, as if she was fighting to stay awake. He couldn't help but wonder if her condition worsened. It looked like it.
"I'm fine, Baji-kun," Sakiko reassured, noticing his stare.
"You look paler," he pointed out.
"I'm fine, really," she smiled. She then took her phone, wiggling the purple teddy charm attached to it, and checked the time. "It's 6 already. I should go,"
"You still have this?" Baji said, staring at the purple charm on Sakiko's phone."It's falling into pieces,"
The teddy bear was indeed a bit severed. The paint was falling off on some parts and there were scratches.
"Eh? Lies! It's holding pretty well," the brown-haired girl defended.
"You should change it,"
"Why should I? You gave it to me, I won't change it,"
Baji stared at Sakiko then slightly chuckled.
"Anyway," he said, putting his things away. "Get out of my house now,"
"Mean," Sakiko pouted as she stood up.
Baji only smiled as he watched her gather her stuff. She stretched again before heading out of his room. Baji walked her to the door and she bid him goodbye.
She liked helping Baji with the school. In those moments, there were just middle schoolers and not part of a gang. She loved Toman, but something, she liked being a normal teenager and doing normal teenager stuff. Since the accident, she had never been a normal teenager anymore. So this little moment was more than cherished by Sakiko.
