Sakiko was rolling balls of chocolate dough and flatting them on a tray. She just finished her homework and decided to make cookies. Sumiko was still in school for her club activities, so Sakiko wanted to cook her something. She was working so hard and always helping her on a daily basis when Sakiko was supposed to be the one helping her. So the middle child of the Yamashita family wanted to do a little something for her sister.
"I'm leaving for work," Sakiko heard her brother say.
She frowned as she looked up. Satohiko passed in the corridor, heading to the front door. But he was not supposed to. Satohiko was owning a bike shop, S.S Motors. It was doing well and Satohiko never had to work night shifts. He didn't need to. So why was he leaving to work now?
"Eh? At this hour?" Sakiko asked, confused as she joined in at the entrance of the house. He was putting his shoes on.
"Yeah, I found another job at a grocery store. I'll be doing night shifts,"
Sakiko's frown deepened.
"But isn't the motorbike shop enough?" she asked.
"It's just in case the hospital bills are more expensive than planned," Satohiko said, standing up.
Sakiko bit her lips, feeling guilty. He was always working. And when he wasn't, he was taking care of Sumiko and her. Satohiko had no time for himself. That was why his previous girlfriend dumped him and it was years ago. Satohiko was living for them. And Sakiko hated that. She wanted him to have fun. She wanted him to hang out with his friends. But she was preventing him from that.
"But you're already working so much. Can't I help you-"
"It's fine, Saki," Satohiko reassured, patting his little sister's head. But Sakiko only bit her inside cheek harder.
He was already having a job that paid well. Yet she still worked hard. He had been doing as such for the five past years. Since the car accident that killed their parents and deteriorated the girl's health, Satohiko had been working more and more. He was not old but it was still too much according. He was killing himself to work and all for her. Because of her. She hated that. Satohiko was saving money for the hospital bills that would come with the heart transplant. Luckily, the money their parents left for the girls would help, though Satohiko wanted to keep it for the moment the girls would go to college. That was why Satohiko was working so hard. He hoped that he would earn enough money to pay the hospital bill himself and not jeopardize the girls' future. Sakiko was incredibly grateful, yet incredibly guilty.
"Hey, come on. I knew worse than night shifts," he smiled, reassuring her. "Besides, I'm your older bro. It's my duty to take care of you,"
Sakiko only nodded, though the pout on her face did not disappear.
"Don't go to bed too late, alright?" Satohiko said, opening the front door. "I'll be back at 6 in the morning,"
He waved, then left.
Everyone was trying their best to make Sakiko's life easier. They were doing more than they should. That was what she felt. She felt like her only existence was making everything harder and more complex than it should.
The girl sighed and headed back to the kitchen. She wished she was like the other kids. She wished she had normal health. She hoped she was normal. Everyone's life would be so much easier. Mikey and Sumiko wouldn't always be worried. Satohiko would be hanging out more often with Wakasa, Keizo, and Takeomi. He would be having fun more often. He would be meeting girls easier. He wouldn't be stuck home. He wouldn't have to worry o much about money. He would be happy.
Sakiko took a shaky breath as she whipped away the tears that threatened to fall. She focused on cooking cookies, trying not to think about anything downcasting.
