ASA'S POV
I quietly slip into our bedroom, unsure of if Cassandra is asleep or not, and not wanting to wake her up if she is. I just put Charlotte down for bed, rocking her against my bare chest like I do every single night as she takes her bottle and then proceeds to fall asleep. She's finally sleeping through the night, which is something that we're really happy about considering she's just on the cusp of three months old.
I strip down to my boxers, tossing my grey joggers onto the ottoman. I showered with Charlotte earlier, another part of our night routine, and as I step further into the room, I'm surprised to find the bed still made, Cassandra not in sight. She must be in the bathroom getting ready for bed.
Pulling back the duvet cover, I clear the throw pillows off the bed, putting them on the ottoman. Normally, Cassandra is in bed before me, and they end up scattered on the floor, which drives me insane. But her chaotic is something that I've come to love.
I sink into the bed, plugging my phone in to charge and setting my alarm for the morning. I've been sleeping in with Cassandra lately, but I really need to get back into working early so I can get home earlier. It's been an adjustment, having just started going back into the office since Charlotte was born. I'm not going to lie, I know it's been hard on both of us, Cassandra having to stay home with both Aislin and Charlotte, and me having to be away from them.
"There you are," I grin as I lean back against the cushioned headboard, watching as Cassandra slips out of the bathroom in her pink pajama set. She smiles at me, and I can tell something is up with the way her hands are hidden behind her back. "Hey. I said no presents."
I'm teasing her of course. I'm honestly not surprised that Cassandra got me something. I was totally expecting it, even though I told her not to worry about it.
After all, I have everything I could ever want in life.
I love my girls, all three of them, and they're my entire world. There's nothing else I could want or wish for that would make my life feel more complete. But I could say this a thousand times and Cassandra will still try and get something for me on my birthday. I think it's the mom in her. She loves flooding us with as much love and happiness as she can, including all the presents in the world. We already celebrated with the girls — a chocolate cake that Aislin picked out and her choice of movie.
"Who said I had a present?" her eyes twinkle as she nears her side of the bed, grinning at me with her beautiful smile. I know it's cheesy to say that I think I fall in love with her more every single day, but it's the fucking truth. She's even more beautiful than when I first met her, and every single day with her just gets better.
"You're hiding something behind your back, and I've come to know my wife," I retort, lifting her pillow up and leaning it against the backboard to allow her into our bed. She sinks onto the bed on her knees, facing me but making it so that her hands stay hidden from me. She shifts a bit and I see her arms move, but I don't say anything as she lifts her hands in front of me as if to prove me wrong.
"What? I don't have anything," she says playfully, and my lip twitches before I smile and roll my eyes at her, knowing very well that it's just hidden behind her on the bed now. Cassandra can play all the games with Aislin she wants, but she can't fool me. She sucks at surprises, especially when it comes to surprising me.
"Alright baby, whatever you say," I grab her hand, urging her a little closer. I want to pull her into my lap, but I also don't want to ruin her wanting to surprise me, so I'll play along. "I love you."
Cassandra smiles, tucking her hair behind her ear. It's a little shorter than usual, but I think it looks good on her. She calls it her 'mom-of-two' hairstyle. I'll have to agree, mom-of-two also looks great on her. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen her happier than she's been lately, even if there's been stress and chaos that comes with it. I'll take on the brunt of it all if it means that my wife is happy.
