Chapter 9: R&R

Archer's POV
The Paladin

My eye fluttered open. I saw I was in the infirmary on the Paladin, laying down on my hospital bed. I begin to get out of bed and walk over to Neo. She was sound asleep on her bed and looked very peaceful sleeping. And now I feel like a creep for standing here watching her sleep. I was about to back away until the door to the infirmary opened up. I turned around and saw Grim walking in.

Grim: Archer, we've landed nearby Vale. I've also got something to discuss with you.

"What's up?"

Grim: Well, since we've discovered Neo is a wanted criminal, normally we'd keep her in the brig, but we've decided to make an exception with her. We've decided she'll be kept under your care. This means you'll have to keep watch of her and make sure she doesn't run off.

"I'm confused Grim, why are you guys making an exception for her?"

Grim: We're making an exception for two reasons. 1.) She's a potentially valuable asset to us. And 2.) If she's connected to who we think, then we may be able to use this as an opportunity for a future operation.

Grim: Yes, pretty much.

"Wait, so how are we supposed to make sure she won't get caught if we go out in public? After all, you did say she's a wanted criminal."

Grim: We specialize in espionage of all sorts Archer, making someone pretty much disappear, and having them become a completely new person isn't anything new.

I nod my head. As soon as Grim stopped talking, we heard the sound of someone sitting up from their bed and a small, little yawn. I looked behind me and saw Neo stretching. She soon then stopped, looked over at us, and gave us a questioning look.

"Hey Neo, how you feeling?"

She gave me a thumbs up but continued with the questioning look she gave us. Oh yeah, that's right. She doesn't know who I am.

"Oh yeah, you don't know me. Well Neo, it's me, 'Trigger' as you called me."

Her face went from one of confusion to one of semi shock. She thoroughly examined my face. She noticed my eyepatch and its placement. She seemed to be deep into thought. After a few seconds, she snapped out of her deep thought and slowly raised her hand up to my face. Her hand was less than an inch away from my face, and she began to caress my eyepatch slightly. It was a little weird... actually, no, I take that back. It was very weird. I kept my eyes on her. Her eyes seemed to be filled with disbelief and shock. Her hand continued to caress my eyepatch but began to move on to the whole side of my face that the eyepatch was on. This went on for a bit until I softly grabbed ahold of her wrist, and she stopped her movement of her hand. Her eyes now seemed to glisten slightly. The slow formation of tears. I was confused as to why she was tearing up until she lurched forward at me and wrapped her arms around my neck, her head resting upon my chest
She's softly crying. I am both extremely confused and have no clue what the fuck to do. I slowly embrace her into a hug, one arm on her back and the other on the back of her head. I begin to awkwardly pat her on the head.

"Hey, uh... you okay?"

She looked up at me, her eyes red and full of tears. She reminded me of Ruby oddly enough. It reminded me of that one time where Ruby had been getting bullied by a group of girls...

Late 1971
No POV

A small little girl dressed in red was running down a road while being chased by a small group of girls.

???: Leave me alone!

The girls were slowly gaining on the one dressed in red. One of the girls had managed to catch up to the girl in red and shoved her to the ground. The girl in red fell down and scraped her hands and knees on the pavement while trying to protect herself. She turned around and saw the group of girls surround her.
