*8 years old (Kakashi is 10)
"Minato Nii-san! You're late!" I whined cheekily, grinning at my older brother in law, who laughed at me, ruffling my red hair.
"Sorry, Emi-chan!" Minato said, then I noticed Kakashi standing behind him. I glared at the white-haired older boy who came walking behind my brother. This guy again.
"Oi, Minato! Why is that jerk here? You teach him all the time!" It's really not fair. I should've been on Team Minato with Obito and Rin! Instead, I'm stuck with Orochimaru-sensei, who creeps me out. Anko is barely any better, and Tokuma refuses to try to be friends. Kakashi would fit in well with them, since he's so mean to everyone.
"Emi, be nice! He's my student and wanted to learn. Besides, I figured it would be good for you to get along better with him." Minato grinned and I narrowed my eyes. Why is Minato always trying to force me to be friends with this guy? I just wanna spend time with him, not this masked jerk.
Minato and I stared each other down for a minute before I shuffled awkwardly and sighed in defeat. "Fine." I muttered, before looking at Kakashi. "Hi, Hatake."
Kakashi nodded back to me and I felt my scowl deepen. "Teme! The least you could do is say hi back!"
"Emi." Minato said monotonously and I instantly shut up.
"Sorry, Minato." I grumbled.
Kakashi still wasn't doing anything other than staring at me blankly, so I crossed my arms and looked at my brother, ignoring the boy. Minato chuckled a little, ruffling my hair again before starting the training.
We were working on the Rasengan, my brother's special A-rank ninjutsu. I wish Minato was just teaching me this. It was supposed to be time for just us for once. He's my brother-in-law, not Kakashi's!
Thankfully, I had already received a good amount of training to do the Rasengan before, whereas Kakashi was just starting. I felt very smug knowing he was only on step 1 while I was on the third and final step, containment.
Kakashi was given water balloons, while I had balloons filled with air. All day, we were practicing our respective exercises to learn the Rasengan, but by the end, while I was still struggling on my step, Kakashi had already finished learning step 1.
"I finished." Kakashi said with no emotion, before turning to me, popped water balloon in hand. I gritted my teeth, what was he waiting for? Was he expecting me to congratulate him?
"Good job, Kakashi!" Minato praised. I slouched a little bit. Minato was supposed to be focusing on me today.
Ruffling both our hair, Minato grinned, pulling Kakashi aside for a second, before taking off to go on his date with my older sister.
Internally pouting, I started stalking off to head home. Kakashi's presence walking beside me made my scowl gradually deepen.
"Why are you following me, Hatake?"
Kakashi's stare didn't change. "I'm walking you home."
"Tch. Why?" I pointedly looked away, finding his presence increasingly annoying.
Kakashi was silent for a few seconds, before he said. "Minato-sensei said I should."
"Why? I'm perfectly fine walking home on my own." I wondered. Why does Minato try so hard for us to be friends?
Kakashi had the same facial expression as always, still looking at me. Doesn't he know it's rude to stare? I don't understand why Rin and the other girls are so into him when he's almost as weird as Anko.
"I know." was all he said. After a little while, he asked, "How long did it take you to master step 1?"
With that, I stopped walking, and I swear, steam was coming off me. "You..." I glared at Kakashi and, faster than he could blink, I had punched him in the face, sending him flying to land on the floor holding his cheek. "Pretentious jerk. Don't think you're better than everyone."
Kakashi was just staring at me, but for once, he actually had a facial expression, his eyes wide open with shock. Most people would be if punched in the face by an eight year old. If he was as deadpan as usual, I would've beat him to a pulp, no matter whether he was a genius or not.
"Sorry." Kakashi said, standing up.
He kept walking beside me after that, although I noticed he seemed more wary than before. It made me happy that he wasn't pretending to be a robot for once.
Eventually, I decided to break the silence. "It took me a week to master chakra rotation." I side-eyed Kakashi angrily. "Don't think you're better than me just cuz you mastered it in a day. I can still defeat you any day of the week."
Kakashi waited a second, probably debating whether to debate the point, which in retrospect, wasn't realistically true, then answered, "Hai."
I sweatdropped. How can someone possibly be this annoying?
Finally, we reached my apartment and I said a hasty goodbye before closing the door behind me.
Why does Kakashi have to get everything? He got Minato as his teacher, he has everyone fawning over him, and everything is easy for him! It's not fair! Meanwhile, I have to deal with Orochimaru, who freaks me out, and teammates who are either weird or antisocial.
I sighed. I would just have to deal with him, since Minato was so proud of him. It was a Shinobi rule not to show emotions, so I wouldn't disappoint Minato by letting him see how much I disliked Kakashi.
After forcing myself to stop wallowing, I put my jacket on over my outfit, which was a red and white armless shirt with black pants, and headed back to the training area, getting back to practicing with the balloons.
I could feel myself getting exhausted as the early hours of the morning arrived and I was surrounded by popped balloons, but I couldn't stop, otherwise Kakashi would catch up to me and stay Minato's favourite. I couldn't let that happen.
Sometime soon after sunrise, I fainted, snoring lightly on the grass, hand still clutching a balloon.
