"Hey, what was wrong?" Alex immediately asked when I got to his house.
I shook my head, "Nothing, I just-"
"I have told you before that you're a shitty liar, right?" He asked in thought, faking his tone and I rolled my eyes.
"Alex, leave her alone." Danny called as we walked into the kitchen.
"So what was it?" He asked me again, ignoring his mother.
"I told you it was nothing, I'll be fine."
"You always say that."
"Well I always am, aren't I?" I pointed as he narrowed eyes at me, obviously trying to see through me.
"Was it Mark?"
"No."
"What was it then?"
"Jesus, Alex, leave it alone, it's not a big deal." I snapped at him in irritation, and he looked confused at my tone, then turning to scowl off into his room. I stayed down as Danny hugged me hello.
"Can I take a guess?" Danny slightly joked, and I granted her permission. "It's Emily."
I chuckled lightly, "How'd you know?"
"Alex eventually told me what happened, and how you and him got pretty friendly after."
We got friendly?friendly? It amused me to find that that was how Alex explained our fake relationship to his mother. What if I told her it was for revenge? She'd think me as a child.
"Oh. Yeah, right."
"What'd she say? Did she see you two at homecoming?"
"Yeah." I blushed, remembering Mark, and hating how my heart decided then to feel terrible for the expression of his beautiful face.
"What about Mark?"
"Him, too." I didn't mean to, but I went slightly more quiet than before, and it was a dead giveaway to her for me. She saw I was a stupidly bewitched teenager who didn't feel for her son the way I felt for his best friend- former best friend.
"I'm sorry, Ava. High school is hard."
She gave me another hug, but I only laughed it off. "I'm fine, really. I guess it makes it easier for us to part when college comes up."
"I thought he was gonna try to go to the same college you'd go to?"
"You really think I'd let him do that?"
She and I shared a laugh.
"That's true. You've always been a sweet girl."
After I finished speaking with Danny, I went up to Alex's room and saw as he glared at a bunch of scattered papers on his bed. He was sat back with crossed arms.
"You're still here." He questioned through gritted teeth. He wasn't irritated, he was angry.
Angry Alex didn't really phase me much. "You're still pissy?"
"Fuck off, Ava. Go home."
I peered at his work. "I can help if you want." I told him, seeing as he glared at the biology in front of him as if it were me. I sat beside him. "Hey." I said softly, and he didn't look at me. "Remember yesterday? It was like we were friends." I told him calmly as he leaned his head back to stare at the ceiling.
He then released a breath and nudged me, then finally allowed himself to look at me. "We are friends, Ava."
At his kind tone I smiled, and leaned into him as he wrapped a friendly arm around me. I was forgiven already, and so easily, too. He and I were friends.
