Chapter 7:
Recovery

Anna

I paced around the small nurse's office.

What is he doing here? Is he crazy? Now everyone knows!

I looked up at Punzie and Mer through the window. They smiled sympathetically. I sighed.

I suddenly heard a breath from behind me. I turned around to see Jack, finally awake, eyes fluttering open. I ran over to him.

"What am I doing here?" He asked, rubbing his eyes.

"Jack, everything's fine, you're in the school nurse's office." I replied.

"The last thing I remember was.... Oh." His eyes widened.

"Yeah... Everyone had to be escorted from the cafeteria." I said.

After Jack fell, teachers and security came over and Jack was taken to the nurse's office. Everyone had to leave because he broke the air vent and now the air doesn't flow like it's supposed to. And since Jack isn't a student, I'm being blamed for it because he said my name.

The nurse and Principle Pitch came into the office and sat down in the chairs. "He's awake now?" He asked.

"Yeah, he's alright." I answered, suddenly nervous. I've never been in trouble before- what's going to happen?

"What's your name, boy?" He asked Jack.

Jack suddenly looked nervous, too. "I'd rather not say." He answered.

"I'm not fooling around. You're definitely not a student of the school. You've damaged the school's property and we need you to pay for it. How did you get on the vents in the first place?"

Jack didn't answer.

Principal Pitch turned to me. "What's his name?"

I looked at Jack, and he looked at me with big, sad eyes. I sighed. What is this boy doing to me? "I don't know him. I guess he just heard my name when I was talking with my friends and he repeated it. I've never seen this boy before in my life."

Principal Pitch raised his eyebrows. "Are you sure, Anna? You've had a perfect record so far, and if I find out you have something to do with this boy..."

"I don't know him, but it's not his fault. The vents were already breaking, he just made it happen sooner. He was injured because of the school's vent system. The vents would have stayed if they were in good condition!" I tried explaining, but I knew it was no use. Jack caused a commotion, and there was nothing I could do.

Principal Pitch stood up and turned to the nurse. "Take him to my office, I'm calling the police." He exited the room, and Jack followed the nurse outside. How was he going with this?

I ran over to him. "Jack, wait-"

Before I could finish, Jack grabbed my hand and ran quickly to the next hallway. I heard the school nurse scream something before coming after us.

"Which way's the exit?" Jack asked while running.

"To the left!" I shouted, catching my breath.

We ran to the next hallway, and I turned to see a few security guards coming after us. "Jack!" I screamed.

We ran through the exit door, pressing our backs on the door. The security guards pounded on the other side.

"What are we going to do? We'll never make it!" I shouted at Jack, trying to hold the door closed.

"You have to trust me!" He shouted back.

"What?"

"Believe in me, for a few minutes!"

I paused, staring deeply at him. There was no other way. "Okay."

Jack stopped pushing the door and picked me up. I gasped, definitely not expecting that. And then, he did something completely crazy.

With me in his arms, he pushed off the ground, sending us shooting up towards the sky. I looked down to see the security guards looking around for us. I stared intently at Jack, and the bright blue sky zooming around us.

We were flying.
