Chapter 8:
Dug UpAnna
I'd seen some pretty crazy things, but I'd never seen anything like this. We were flying- like, actually flying! Arendelle seemed so small from up there. I reached out and touched the clouds, an impossible feeling that I never thought I'd feel.
I looked up at Jack, and he seemed to be so concentrated on flying. How he could do it, I had no idea.
In a few minutes, we landed (landed?) in the driveway of my house. He leaned on his knees, taking deep breaths.
"That- That was crazy! How long have you been doing that? How do you do that?"
Jack looked up, panting slightly. "I don't really know, it just... Happens."
"It's incredible! Is that how you got onto the air vent? And into my house? That's so cool!" He didn't say a word; he stayed taking deep breathes on his knees. "How many people know about this?"
"Just you."
"Nevermind... You can totally stay in my house!" I exclaimed. I can't believe I treated him like trash- he can fly! Like a bird!
He smiled. "Well, finally I convinced you."
My smile faded. I barely knew him. But I feel like I can tell him anything! "Under one condition: tell me why you're homeless."
Jack's smile faded, too. He scratched the back of his head. "That's not exactly- um..."
Jack
I froze. What was I supposed to tell her? That I had escaped from jail and had nowhere to stay? I'm just lucky the cops haven't found me yet.
"That's not exactly- um..." I had no idea what to say.
Anna raised her eyebrows. "Well? Let me hear it."
I bit my lip and sighed. "I- I can't tell you."
Her face suddenly changed, and she seemed desperate to hear another answer from me. But after a few seconds, her expression was cold and hard. "Fine. But I'm not letting a complete stranger stay at my house." She walked past me and took out her keys angrily to open the front door.
So flying wasn't enough. What is enough for this girl? "Anna, wait!"
She stopped taking out her keys and out her hands on her hips, waiting for me. "Alright. Tell me."
I looked down, not wanting to meet her eyes. "I..."
She frowned at me impatiently. "What is it? Spit it out!"
"IescapedfromjailandIhavenoplacetostay!" I said quickly.
"What? I don't understand a word you're saying!"
"Fine! I escaped from jail and I have no place to stay..."
She smiled, a bit confused. "I don't get it?"
Um... Okay. Not exactly the reaction I was expecting. "Don't get what?"
"The joke?" She asked.
"What joke? It's not a joke!" I tried to tell her.
She was silent for a moment. "Is... Is it true?"
"Yeah...?" Her expression changed and she began to walk away quickly. "Anna, wait!" I reached out for her hand.
"Don't touch me!" Anna stopped. "Don't drag me into your life and expect me to help you! My life is fine and I don't need you to mess it up!"
"Wait, I can explain-" She shoved me and slammed the front door in my face.
If only I could just explain that night in the boat. No one understands.
