It was then dinner time and both me and my grandmother were eating at the house of a family named the guzmans.
"we're so happy to have new people here in our small town," said the older woman of the house.
"well your town is beautiful señora alicia." said grandma while eating some of the roasted chicken that had been served to us alongside some boiled potatoes and chicharron."oh the town isn't ours!" the woman's husband chuckled in a raspy voice, clearly showing off his big age.
"yes, it was created by the madrigals to protect us from the bandits and killers from out of town." alicia responded with a smile, i frowned, how come she seemed so happy about it? well to be honest everyone here was—strangely—really happy with everything."oh how thoughtful of them!" said grandma adelina while sipping onto her own glass of wine.
i looked over at the guy that sat in front of me, he had a nice buff body and beard with a slight weave of hair that seemed to be well treated, you could say he was one of the few handsome men in the whole town."well yes, the madrigals are the best kind of people we have." the woman chuckled.
"they helped me fix the ceiling last week!" said mr.guzman with a small laugh.
"well me and my granddaughter needed to have a word with them about our candle." said grandma adelina as the carved candle sat next to my plate, the guzmans looked over at me and my candle."oh! you sure have a beautiful candle." said mrs.guzman.
"it's a family heirloom..." i responded quietly, the guy in front of me gave me a smile.
"why do you have to speak with the madrigals about your candle?" asked the guy, in a deep and flirty tone of a voice—very weird if you ask me.
"well it's sort of personal." grandma chuckled nervously while looking down at me, i just looked down at my plate before eating a piece of potato."well then we wish you luck." the woman bowed her head, grandma frowned.
"luck?" grandma asked.
"well yes!" mr.guzman laughed "having an actual conversation with the madrigals is impossible!" the man let out a cackle.
"perdon?" grandma frowned.
"it's impossible im telling you!" the old man cackled again "one moment they're helping you with your kids and in the next they're up in that cave hiding themselves from the world!" the man shook his head.i slightly tilted my head in confusion, so the madrigals were a busy family then? how helpful.
"oh! that's interesting." said grandma adelina wearing the same frown as me
"it's a shame really," mrs.guzman sighed "they seem like very nice people." she shrugged."yes i think so too." grandma nodded "but is there a way for us to even talk to them?" she asked.
the guzmans looked at eachother and shrugged, i sighed in defeat as the son of the guzmans began to gather up the empty plates and pots."gracias pela comida señora and señor guzmans, but we must be on our way now." grandma adelina chuckled while standing up from her seat.
"ah yes, have a wonderful night señorita adelina." mrs.guzman waved frantically with a grin.we got escorted out of the place and were met with the dark atmosphere of the night in encanto, the houses were then covered by the light of the stars as crickets and birds chirped and hopped along the trees and grass fields.
"I haven't seen the stars for so long, it makes me forget about their beauty sometimes." grandma said as we looked over at the sky."it's so calm out here." i said, grandma let out a chuckle.
"we should go back to the carriage, we'll sleep there for tonight and we'll try talking to the madrigals tomorrow morning soon as possible!" she said while pulling me with her towards the dark path we went through.
"i hope we can lit up the candle," i mumbled.
"i know things are scary mi hija," grandma sighed "but we'll get our family back, i just know it." she patted me on the back as we continued our way back.we arrived at the carriage and let ourselves sleep on the back of the vehicle alongside my frozen aunt, letting the old sheets of grandma's old bed cover our warm bodies. all i could do was stare at the statue as the crickets continued to sing, i couldn't bring myself to fall asleep.
