VI. CASA MADRIGAL

i couldn't sleep, it wasn't because of another breakdown or anything, this time my mind kept wondering on what stood upon that cave the madrigals hid in, was it a rustic sort of home they had? a storage room? or maybe just a hole? i didn't know, i needed to know.
would i die trying to fulfil my wonder? of course. but i would die anyway, so it didn't matter to me anymore, i needed answers.
i wasn't going to sit down and pretend everything was fine, i had a family to save!

i put on a white blouse with a yellow skirt and a orange belt around my waist, i grabbed onto the candle and got myself off of the carriage, looking down at my frozen aunt i began to wish myself good luck, for i might die tonight, and if so i could at least remember my aunt's face.

i let out a sigh and positioned myself to go back inside the town, the light of the house had soon disappeared as the folk slept in their beds alongside their families and loved ones. the silent wind would hit some bushes and trees letting the soft sound of leaves moving drown my ears.
looking around i had finally spotted the dirt trail that led towards their cave, soon enough i had reached my stop.

not even the slightest amount of shock or amusement could describe how i felt at that moment, in front of me stood a thin bridge made out of boulders that connected to the other side of the raveen under it.
the other side had a huge mansion with a similar construction of the houses back in the village but this one had giant boulders on the corners and bottom parts of the house instead.

"caralho..." i mumbled as i took in the whole scenery, everything in it seemed so mesmerizing and delicate, it seemed too good to be true.
taking a few steps into the bridge i could hear a slight wind chime by the hole of the raveen.

i continued to walk with my breath very still as i tried not to get cold feet, holding onto the ropes that had been placed on both side of the bridge i continued to move in a slow and careful pace.

i had then reached the other side, the giant house standing a few feet away from me, it was surprisingly much bigger up close.
"caralho eles moram aqui?(fuck do they live here?)" i mumbled to myself as i got closer to the house.

"what are you doing here?" i heard a whisper as a hand had been placed on my shoulder, i let out a quiet scream and a jump, quickly turning around to see the same girl in green glasses from our first day here.

"i erm..." i blinked with a dry mouth.
"you need to leave." she said whilst pulling me by the arm towards the bridge.
"wait no!" i yanked myself back from her, she gave me a weird look and then looked down at the candle in my hand, her brows knitted together.

"i need to speak with mirabel." i said, the girl tilted her head.
"im mirabel." she said while crossing her arms.

"oh great." i breathed "cause i need you to help me with my family's candle." i said while showing her the carefully carved candle, mirabel couldn't seem to understand the issue.
"use a match?" she said.
"normal fire doesn't work," i sighed "my aunt told me to reach out to your family." i responded.

"your aunt?" mirabel slouched down to look closely at the candle.
"yes, she told me your family could light it up again." mirabel's eyes widened.
"your..." she looked at me up and down "your family was also given a miracle?" she asked, i nodded "that's... that's amazing!" she grinned but soon enough frowned again "wait so if your candle is out that means you probably don't have a home or even a way to protect yourself!" she said while placing her hands on my shoulders.

"i guess...?" i gave her a nervous smile, mirabel hummed into thought.
"perhaps..." she looked up at her house "you could stay with us for a while! until we find out a way to light up the candle of course." she shrugged, i tilted my head.
"you don't know how to light up the candle?" i asked, mirabel blinked and smacked her lips.

"of course!" she forced a chuckle "i just thought-you know!" then forced a smile.
"know what?" i cocked an eyebrow.
"you wouldn't have to sleep on a stranger's house and...stuff." she said while rubbing the back of her neck.

"aren't you a stranger as well?" i asked.
"um..." mirabel looked around before grinning, with a very weird grin.
"anyways," i sighed "we're sleeping in our carriage so we don't-"
"in a carriage?! that's horrible!" she said pulling me close to her face, almost breaking my balance.

"not really-"
"i'll prepare the guest room for you and your family!" she said while pointing her finger towards the sky "how many are you...?" she asked while looking down at me, i blinked.
"just me and my grandma." i responded.
"oh." the girl blinked back "well uh ok!" she forced another chuckle.

"but we don't-"
"sh sh sh..." said mirabel as she placed a finger on my lips "you don't need to thank us." she winked before walking up the front stairs of the house.

"where are you going?" i asked in a slightly louder tone.
"i'll get luisa to bring out your carriage of course!" mirabel shouted back before slamming the door behind her.

i bit my lip, was this really a good choice? they were total strangers who had actual powers! does she think my family also had powers? i hope not, it would've been a very awkward conversation to have in the further future.

i looked down at the chameleon bracelet, it made me remember that night i had with camilo, if he was part of the madrigals then he was definitely living in that house.

suddenly the door slammed open and a tall brunette with giant muscles came out, wearing a white blouse and blue skirt as her brown chocolate hair had been wrapped up in a high bun.
i blinked and gave out a gulp, she could definitely kill me at thumb war.

"where is the vehicle?" asked mirabel with her head popping out behind the giant woman as girl continued to walk along the bridge.
"um...on the entrance of town?" i responded.
"entrance of the town luísa!" mirabel shouted.
"on it!" said luisa giving a thumbs up and fastening her pace from out of the bridge.

"she'll take care of everything." mirabel waved off, i frowned and grasped the candle close to my chest.
"ok." i mumbled.
"come on in! i'll show you your room." mirabel gestured before stepping back inside, i sighed and began to follow up the front steps towards her by the door frame.

"you'll love it here!" mirabel sang as we got in, inside was a giant plaza in the middle of the house with a balcony surrounding it, it almost looked like a full on stage.
on the top of the balcony i could see some sets of different coloured doors, one of them had drawings of tucans and leopards on it in a sort of yellow surface while the other one next to it had both orange and yellow surface with chameleons and other decorations on it.

"what's your name by the way?" asked mirabel as we walked up the staircase that stood on one of the corners of the house.
"um...lara manuela dos santos." i responded while my eyes wondered around the many portraits that stood around it.
"do you want me to call you lara or manuela?" she asked again.
"lara's fine." i shrugged.
"great!" mirabel shrugged back.
may the lord send help, i'll sure need it.
