Hugh's POV:
"What happened?" I asked her. "One minute you're believing in fairytales, and the next you've gone dark on me.
"Nothing, it's alright," she spoke shaking her head.
"Please? You don't have to hide the sad things from me. Sometimes it helps to talk about them," I said, reaching out to grab her forearm with my wet hand.
"Years ago, I was in love with one of my closest friends. We had gotten together for about a year. He was my happy place, a place away from the drama of home. I thought he treated me well because he cared, but his actions were self serving. I was so desperate to be cared for, to matter to someone, that I didn't see what was happening," she poured the pepper mix into the pot and stirred. "The entire year we dated I trusted him, loved him. Then on our one year anniversary, he had completely ignored me. I just thought he was busy. I took a deep breath and made my way into class. My best friend was sitting on his lap. That was when he told me some pretty messed up things that still get to me today, and announced that he and my best friend had been dating in secret for the last 8 months and were expecting a child."
She stirred the food more rapidly. I dried my hands and set one on her good shoulder and the other on her waist. "That's awful," I spoke. "What happened after that?"
"Since the three of us were so close, they had the gall to ask me to be the godparent. Me being the person I am, couldn't tell them no, but I didn't say yes either. I ended up just breaking off contact," she spoke. "I hadn't seen them in over 10 years, but today I ran into Courtney at the liquor store. They're still together, she's pregnant with twins."
She grabbed the small pot and a large spoon with holes. "That's why you looked upset when you came out of the store today."
"It's not like I miss him or still have feelings for him. But that day I lost my boyfriend and my best friend in one go. All I could feel was the betrayal of it all. It made me feel like I was the one that had done something wrong." She placed the pot on a cool burner on top of the stove. She grabbed a frying pan, the tortillas and some cheese. She placed the tortilla on the pan first and scooped on plenty of cheese. Then she added an even layer of of the mixture, and more cheese on top.
"You didn't do anything wrong, except for loving an asshole who didn't deserve you," I replied protectively.
"Sometimes though, the things he said to me that day in front of everyone just get stuck in my head and I fixate on them. Then I can't really get passed them, they just play on loop in my head," she sighed. "Days like today are the worst for that."
"What did he say?" I asked her, grazing her upper arm with my fingertips.
"Its not important," she shook her head, flipping the food in the pan.
"It is if it's upsetting you. You don't have to hold it in."
"I'm not sure why, but I trust you. That worries me because I don't trust anyone Hugh. Ever. This conversation stays in this room," she spoke, feeling frustrated.
"I promise I won't tell anyone about this," I told her. She slid the food onto a plate and started coating another tortilla in cheese.
"He told me he didn't love me and he never did. He said that I was unlovable, and I wasn't the sort of person someone is meant to be with. I was the person someone hangs onto until they've found the right one for them," she said with a shaky voice. She was doing her best to hold back her feelings and not cry.
