Amelia's POV:
I gripped onto him for dear life. As selfish as it was, I couldnt let him go. His tense muscles soften and he released a soft sigh of relief.
"I know everything isn't resolved yet, but I promise we will talk about this as soon as you can talk," he spoke kissing the top of my forehead.
Then Doctor Henderson and another doctor entered with two nurses. They quickly removed the tubing from the ventilator and I could finally breathe on my own again. My jaw was a little sore, but I knew that would fade.
Then Dr. Henderson explained that my injuries would heal soon from the accident and that my transplant had gone successfully. It would take a bit of time for the liver to grow to full size, but it would work.
"Wait, what transplant?" I asked with a scratchy voice. My throat ached, but I needed to ask.
"Your liver transplant, Amelia," Dr. Henderson smiled. "Mr. Hunt found you a living donor just in time."
"This isn't a bribe, or a way to force you to be with me " Hugh spoke sadly. "If you decide that you don't want this with me, I'll live happily knowing that you have a chance to still find happiness your there. But between you and me, I really hope you choose to be with me."
Ignoring the pain I yanked him down towards me and kissed him softly on the lips. "We're still going to talk about Jennifer. But you're mine," I grumbled in frustration. Hugh smiled and placed another soft kiss on my lips before standing upright. "I'd like to thank the donor, if possible."
"She really wants to meet you too," Hugh smiled. "It was Joanna."
"Is she still here?" I asked.
"She is in another recovery room. She wanted to take a bit of time to recover so she could gather her strength to come meet you," Dr. Henderson smiled.
"Thank you so much, for everything," I called out to everyone in the room.
"You spent your life taking care of us," Jason.
"We didn't step up when we should have. We let everything fall on you," my step father spoke sadly.
"But still you protected us, did everything for us. You didn't want us in the crossfire," Josh spoke.
"But now, it's our turn to protect you," James smiled.
"Taking care of you, loving you, is something I will always vow to do," Hugh added, kissing the top of my head.
I squeezed his hand as everyone else started to leave the room. "We'll be in the waiting room," James explained.
"You two need to talk," my stepfather added as they left.
"Brittany was someone who was never really on my radar. I was always with Joanna, and expected to continue to be with her. I didn't really have the time to have an interest in anyone else. When Brittany heard about the wedding getting called off, I guess she came looking for me. But she couldnt find me. She saw us at the diner completely by chance. When I introduced you as my girlfriend, something in her sort of snapped. She thought kissing me would get my attention, and get rid of you all.in one blow. I was stunned, and didn't see it coming as she was one of Joanna's friends. I was prepared for her to yell at me for running away, not kiss me. When she kissed me, I felt disgusted, wrong, and suprised all at once. It took me a few moments to really understand what was happening, and when I did, I shoved her away. You had already left by the time i made it back in the diner. I grabbed a cab just in time.to follow you. I caught up to you just in time.to see the truck lose contorl and push you through the guardrail. I've never been so terrified in my life," he explained, a tear sliding down his cheek and squeezing my hand. "I thought I lost you. But we got you here, and Joanna's results came in, saying she was a match. They rushed back here and you both went into surgery."
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have run," I spoke softly, running my fingers through his hair. "I'm so sorry I worried you."
"But you're here, and alive. All I keep thinking of is how betrayed you must felt," Hugh added.
"I was being irrational. I allowed being hurt in the past to make me assume that it would happen again," I replied as pain shot through my side. I cringed.
"Here, press this button for your pain medication," he spoke. "Rest now, I'll be here. We can talk after."
"I love you, and I always will," I spoke as he pressed the button. "Please forgive me for responding the way I did."
"There's nothing to forgive, love."
