Amelia's POV:
We finished grabbing the last of the liquor. Hugh stepped outside of the store as I made my way to pay. I took a deep breath and started putting my items up on the belt.
I looked up at the cashier and recognized her immediately. It was my childhood best friend, Courtney. We had been best friends all through elementary and middle school. We even began highschool as friends. Halfway through our freshman year, she had slept with my boyfriend, and had gotten pregnant with his child. He decided to tell me with her at his side in the middle of class. I was devastated, and humiliated.
She finished with the customer before me, and for the first time I realized that she was pregnant. I looked away, trying to focus on anything but the woman ahead of me.
"Oh hello Amelia," she sneered.
"Hello Courtney," I smiled, masking my true feelings. "I guess a congratulations is in order, how are you?"
"I'M just fine," she boasted, grabbing my bottles and scanning them. She tilted her hand to show off her wedding ring. "Justin and I are expecting our fifth and six children."
"Twins? That's wonderful. I'm happy li y for you both," I smiled, not giving her the satisfaction she clearly sought out.
"No ring I see," she mocked. "That's a shame, marriage just isn't for everyone though. I'm sure you'll find some way to fd fulfilled. Motherhood is just so magical, though you'll never understand," she mocked scanning my last item.
I kept smiling and swiped my card. "I see you still feel tearing people down still makes you feel better. It's a shame you haven't changed at all. I hope you and James have a wonderful life together."
I loaded my bags into my cart. "I'm plenty mature! I have four kids!" She argued back.
"Have a nice day Courtney," I repeated as I grabbed my receipt from the printer and walked out, pushing my cart.
As I made it onto the sidewalk, Hugh met up with me. "Is everything okay?" He asked. "You look upset."
"You need to stop asking me if I'm okay all the time. I'm fine," I replied flatly. I used the button on my remote to unlock the car doors and quickly loaded the bags into the back with the groceries.
Hugh returned the cart to the corral as I got in. He took off his backpack and slid into the passenger seat. "Where to next?" He asked quietly.
"The manor," I spoke gripping the steering wheel. I tried to get Courtney's smug face out of my head but it wasn't really working. I refused to let her win this stupid game she was playing.
I took deep breaths. "Amelia?" He asked.
"Yeah?" I replied.
"What happened back there?" He asked worriedly.
"You ask alot of questions," I retorted. "Dont worry about me. I'll be fine. I just need to cool down."
"Okay," he spoke. Seeming to understand. He pulled up the sleeves of his sweatshirt exposing his tattooed forearms. I glanced over at him, recognizing a few.
"You're a gamer?" I asked, feeling a bit suprised. I turned back to the road, following it to the edge of town.
"Yeah, I always loved to play. Though I don't get much time these days," he smiled.
"I hope you're ready to get your ass kicked, my brothers and I are pretty competative," I laughed.
"Somehow I don't doubt that," he laughed.
