Amelia's POV:
The next morning, we sat at my doctor's appointment awaiting the results of the tests they had run. My mother was expecting us back soon. Hugh had requested that I personally take him downtown as a way to head to my doctor's office today for a last minute appointment.
His phone rang, he silenced the call without looking at the screen. "I'll call them back later."
"It's okay, I'm used to these appointments," I spoke reassuringly.
"It's okay, I'll call them back later," he said taking my hand in his. "I'm here for you."
The doctor reentered the room. Hugh gripped my hand tightly. "I regret to inform you that you would not be a match, Mr. Hunt," my doctor spoke sadly. "However, another prospective donor reached out. She requested to remain anonymous and she specifically asked to be tested for compatibility with you by name," Dr. Henderson smiled.
"What? I don't know anyone who would offer something like that," I said quietly, wracking my brain. "Noone knows I'm sick."
I looked up at Hugh who was desperately trying to hold back a smile. "You did this," I accused, looking at him.
"I may have spoken to someone to vent about our current predicament. She offered, I didn't ask. If she's a match she would like to talk to you," he smiled back down at me.
"You didn't have to do that," I spoke sadly, tears springing to my eyes. "I made peace with all of this."
"If I can keep you from dying, I will. Even if you don't want a future with me, Amelia. Because if you don't want to be together, knowing that you're living your life safely and you're healthy, that would be enough for me. I want you to live to have the chance to be happy," he replied, staring into my eyes.
The tears finally fell. "Please tell me you're keeping him around. You need someone like him, given all you go through," Dr. Henderson smiled.
"I plan to," I smiled, pulling him closer to me.
"Just remember to rest plenty of the time. Don't put too much stress on your body, if you do, it will shut down quicker. And please, try not to get too upset or distressed. Your body is on overload right now, any major distress can push you to fall unconscious," she scolded. She knew what my situation at home was like. She saw the scars. She was just worried.
The rest of the appointment went smoothly and before I knew it we were leaving. Once we made it to the car I felt myself break down.
"I don't know what to make of this," I spoke sadly. "I know it sounds stupid or dumb, but I'm having a hard time processing it. It's like I'm overwhelmed and my brain doesn't understand it."
"Let's go get something to eat. My treat," he smiled, rubbing my hand soothingly.
"I don't really know that I could eat right now," I replied out of habit. My stomach has a hard time with food, especially when I'm upset.
Hugh carefully leaned over and wiped my tears. "I want to get something in you, even if it's just a bit of broth, you need your strength," he smiled.
I nodded slowly and put my seatbelt on. He gently released my cheeks. We pulled up at my favorite diner (the closest one to the house). Before I could get out of the car, he pressed his lips to mine.
The kiss was passionate, yet tender and loving. It was like he wanted me to feel how he felt for me through the kiss. He pulled back and rested his forehead against mine.
"I know it seems crazy, but I love you. Not just the idea of you, it feels like my heart only beats for you," he spoke.
I froze. "Its hard to know because I've never felt romantic love before, not like this. But if the feeling I have in my heart is any indication, I think I love you too," I mumbled shyly.
He gave me one last kiss and we went inside. We sat at my normal booth and waited for the waitress to come take our order.
Just then, an angry blonde stomped up to our table. "Hugh!" she called out in an annoyed voice. "Where have you been?"
"Jennifer, this is my lovely girlfriend Amelia, and you are disturbing our meal," he said coldly.
"I need to speak with you in private," she glared at me.
"I can go," I spoke feeling uncomfortable.
"No, you stay," Hugh spoke tenderly. He led Jennifer just outside the diner. They were at the window a table down from us. Though I couldn't hear them I could see them.
They were arguing. Then she grabbed Hugh's cheeks and pulled him into a deep kiss. My heart stopped and shattered into a million pieces. After a moment Hugh pulled away.
'He was never yours, he was never going to stay, he never wanted you,' that little voice inside my head spoke.
I bolted from the table, leaving Hugh a bit of cash and a note that said "take a cab."
I needed to leave, I needed to not see him. I left through the employee entrance in back and walked around the diner to my car. Tears fell from my eyes as I drove.
'How could I be so stupid?'
