To Hikari Hayami, today was going to be like any other she had faced since she and her best friend Tohru had moved into a tent in a random portion of some random woods. She would make sure Tohru didn't trip on any out of place roots that stuck up out of the ground, make sure all of their school work was in place, and remember all the important events and details. One would say that this may seem like a daunting task, but Hikari could not be anymore thankful for these 'chores'. They kept her grounded, and reminded her of her place.
Hikari's place being to do her best to help and protect Tohru, afterall she made a promise. One she would rather die than neglect to uphold.
Now Hikari stood with Tohru, admiring a view from the top of a forest ledge the two often found themselves visiting. Hikari made sure to keep her guard up, one wrong move and the two of them would plummet to their deaths. Some would say that she was a pessimist at times like these, and Hikari could never find herself disagreeing.
"The breeze feels so nice! Don't you think Hikari?" Tohru wondered as the wind mae her hair flutter.
"I do, it's very refreshing." Her friend stated, a slight smile etched on her cheeks.
Eventually, the two found themselves admiring figurines on a porch of some random house they came across.
"Tohru, this is dangerous..." Hikari sighed as Tohru continued to admire the figurines.
"But these are so cute! Aw, I bet that one's your favorite!" Tohru pointed at the cream colored bunny figurine.
Only then did Hikari notice the figurines were of the chinese zodiac, and suddenly she was admiring the figures too. Hikari was often entranced at the story Tohru's mom would tell when they were younger.
Hikari found her eyes lingering on the rabbit in particular, and she smiled. Her favorite animal would always end up being a bunny.
Suddenly, Hikari was startled by a voice coming out of the house connected to the porch, and she could tell that Tohru jumped too.
"It isn't often I see any girls around here..." A man looking to be in his late 20's mumbled at the sight of the pair.
In Hikari's experience of having to judge books by their covers, this one's looked like a complete and total perv, causing Hikari to take a slight step in front of Tohru.
"Oh- Uh! I'm sorry, sir! I promise I was just looking, nothing more!" Tohru apologized, frantically.
In the end, the guy didn't turn out to be all that much of a creep. Hikari was able to tell when Yuki Sohma walked out and scolded him. Hikari didn't really care about any of the people going to her school except for Tohru, Uo, and Saki, but she had a feeling that Yuki Sohma was one of the few that could be trusted. Even the man, (who she know knew as Shigure), had that vibe to him, if only a little bit. That's why Hikari agreed to walk to school with Yuki.
As the trio walked down the mountain in which Shigure's house sat, Hikari really felt her hair blow in the gentle breeze, even if it was tied in low, long, uneven and shaggy, umber colored pigtails. Her bangs were getting way to long, and they covered most of her eyes, so the breeze blowing them along was an asat to Hikari in the grand scheme of things.
------
After Hikari, Saki, and Uo dealt with Yuki's fangirls, it was time for another long and boring day of school to whiz by. Hikari being 16, was still a first year (albeit the oldest in the year). She barely had any classes with Tohru, or any of her other friends, meaning that school was always particularly uneventful.
However this time Hikari payed more attention to Yuki. It was almost painfully obvious that he, himself was in some sort of pain. He clearly felt that going out of his way for others could substitute helping himself.
Hikari was scared that if she looked deeper into him, she would see herself.
And that's the last thing she would want, to realize and to get distracted by her fatal flaws.
She was too busy looking out for Tohru to even acknowledge them, anyways.
