Chapter 12 (Sunao)

*Doom!*

I... made Okasawa cry. I'm the worst. The absolute worst. If I had known skipping work would break her down into tears, I would've never asked!

"..."

As for the run with Yua, that too was a nightmare. The gym teacher was eyeing us the whole time, so there was no chance for me to even coach her during the run. In the end, it took me a total of four minutes to complete the two laps. As for Yua, it took her a total of eight. She was so slow that even I ran past her at one point. She... really was out of shape. Wonder why nobody ever talks about it.

"*Sigh...*"

But what am I going to do with Okasawa? Lately, I've barely been able to talk to her thanks to Shawn and his elaborate plan of setting me up with other girls. The sole exception being work. But even then, I feel like she's been growing more and more distant from me. And that awkward run-in we had earlier today was... Khh! I don't wanna think about it! Get out, get out!

"..."

I glanced over at the empty rice bowl and the plate where the takuan used to be. Maybe... I should make it up to her. I don't know how I could do it, but I can't just leave Okasawa alone after making her cry. I'd have to be the biggest jerk on Earth to do something like that. Hmm...

*Tap. Tap.*

Take on extra shifts? It'll probably make her dad happy, but Okasawa might start worrying about my studies. Maybe promise to help her study? But she's doing much better than I am! If there's anything I can do, it'll have to be something simple like preparing lunch!

"...!"

L-Lunch... Usually, the girl makes the boy a box lunch to showcase her feelings for him. I've seen it many times in love novels and anime. But I've never seen one where it happens the other way around. Will Okasawa be happy with that? A box lunch made by me?

"..."

No way. Unless Okasawa loves takuan to the point where she would eat that rather than the sushi, I doubt she'll like it. Sure, she may accept it with a smile on her face, but I bet she'll toss it out the moment she gets the chance! Grrr! Why can't I have any normal food to give to someone! Even two cuts of cooked spam will be good!

*Ding!*

A text? I picked up the phone and saw who sent it. Shawn? It's way past nine pm. Not knowing how to respond, I tapped on the message and read it. It said...

'Can we meet tomorrow at lunch?'

A complete monotonous tone. I could tell since he didn't add anything else to it. No gif. No emoji. Nada. And plus... Why was he asking me for permission? He always showed regardless if he asked me or not. And besides. I'm always there, so it's not like he was messaging me if I could skip a remedial lesson.

"..."

Welp. Might as well respond.

*Tap. Tap.*

'Sure. What for?'

*Ding!*

That was quick!

'Something important. Forgive me, sir.'

Forgive me?

*Tap. Tap.*

'What do you mean by that?'

"..."

*Tick... Tick...*

No response. That was until I saw Shawn read my message. He... left me on read? Impossible. Usually, I'm the one who stops texting before he does! I-If he's leaving me on read, then isn't it something super serious?
