"I'm sorry that happened to you." Serta finally whispered. The sky had now turned an inky black, the stars trying desperately to push away the night as they flickered, so far away. Even the flowers looked forlorn as the icy wind tossed them from side to side, like an old rag doll. Everything had gone quite, all seeming to understand the healers story and wanting to show their care for her.
"What's done is done." Roseanne assured. But I didn't fall for her mask. I tried to steer her mind away from, what I was sure it was thinking about, her past.
"Did I tell you how pretty you look?" I smiled at her, a pitiful attempt.
"No. But thank you very much." She sighed. I couldn't be offended that she hadn't told me back, after all she'd barely looked at me. I felt the sorrow around her and felt the desperate need to change it.
"Hey." I softly tilted her chin towards me. "Your free now." I reminded her. "No one can touch you." She gave me a timid smile, it didn't reach her eyes. I pulled her close and embraced her. I let my back shelter her from the wind. "Your free, and I won't let anyone touch you." This time a hard edge came to my voice. It was my duty to keep anyone away from her, anyone that would hurt her. I would stand by that, until we were more than twenty seas apart. Maybe even then.
"Serta?" She asked.
"Yes?"
"Will you kiss me?" Roseanne was looking at me now. My thumb lifted her lips to mine, but I still held her close to me. She pulled away for a second, just to smile at me and thank me, and then she kissed me again. Deeper. She needed me, almost as much as I needed her.
I let her have me.
Only when the sun arose behind us, did we go back. I stayed with her the next night too, just lying beside her, staring at the ceiling. Only then would my thoughts return to me, and I could think about Jax, Dana and everything else. I wanted to forget about that. I wanted to forget the death tolls, my kingdom's losses, all the wars and yellow bloods that drowned away my home. Because the ember inside of me had washed away with that.
But somewhere inside me a flame was waiting, waiting to be lit.
