Jupiter stepped through the front door of her aunt and uncle's house, her heart light and her mood bright after her final day of school. The familiar scent of her favorite meal wafted through the air, bringing a smile to her face. She dropped her worn book bag next to the sofa with a quiet thud and made her way toward the kitchen. Pausing at the threshold, she couldn't help but silently chuckle at the sight before her. Her Uncle Simon, still in his work clothes, was twirling Aunty Isabelle around the kitchen like they were teenagers again. Isabelle's laughter echoed through the room just before Simon pulled her in for a kiss and then casually strolled over to the sink to wash his hands.

Not wanting to intrude on their tender moment, Jupiter tiptoed back from the kitchen, retreating to the stairs with light footsteps. She ascended to the sanctuary of her bedroom, a place that had always been a comforting escape. As she reached her window, she looked out to the world beyond, watching her peers down the street. Groups of friends, arms slung over each other's shoulders, were laughing and celebrating the end of the school year. They radiated joy and freedom, their parties filled with the energy of youth and excitement.

Jupiter sighed, a tinge of bitterness flickering in her chest. "Damn you, universe, for making me such a freak," she muttered to herself as she collapsed backward onto her bed, which greeted her with the softest embrace. Her eyes drifted to the ceiling, covered with intricate and delicate drawings of landscapes, flowers, and creatures that her mother had lovingly sketched when she was a child. The artwork transported her to distant worlds, each image a reminder of her mother's endless creativity and love.

Raising her right arm into the air, Jupiter gazed at her wrist. The bracelet-like pattern of her soul marks, a constellation of seven stars, shimmered faintly in the evening light. Each star represented one of her soulmates, destined to meet her at some point in her life. According to the myths, when she encountered each soulmate, one of the stars would change to their favorite color, or turn gold to signify the bond had been formed. It was a beautiful yet overwhelming reality. Seven soulmates? Most people were lucky—or cursed, depending on their view—with one, but Jupiter had to grapple with the idea of seven. It made her feel different, out of place, like she was living in a universe that had a strange plan for her that she wasn't sure she was ready for.

For a moment, she let herself imagine what her future could be like—how the stars on her wrist might transform with each encounter, what these soulmates might be like, and whether they would even like her. But the weight of such thoughts soon grew too heavy. Deciding not to dwell on it, she let her arm fall back to her bed with a soft thump and reached for her solace—the worn copy of Twilight resting on her bedside table.

The cover was faded, and the edges of the pages were frayed from countless readings, but it was still her favorite escape. As she slid the old, creased bookmark from the middle of the book, she snuggled into her pillow, her body sinking into the soft comforter. She was soon absorbed in the familiar world of vampires and werewolves, leaving behind the uncertainty of her own life for the tangled romance of Bella and Edward. Here, in her room, with her book, Jupiter found peace, even if it was only temporary.
