Galinda and Elphaba were forced to be roommates, and neither one liked the other. Galinda thought that Elphaba was too nerdy and weird looking, while Elphaba thought Galinda was too glitzy and glamorous.
Both girls seemed content to pass the next few 'settling-in' days ignoring each other, and not speaking a word. The silence however was not at all peaceful, there was a brooding animosity rife in the air whenever they were in the same room. It was the night before classes were to commence, and Elphaba sat at her desk to dictate a letter to her father. She knew that he'd be anxious to hear how Nessarose was settling in, and if she was living up to her promises regarding her care. She sat at her desk, and took out a quill pen and paper. "My dear father, I wrote with a scowl of annoyance, 'There's been some confusion over rooming here at Shiz, but of course I'll care for Nessa.' As she wrote, she heard her roommate's thoughts on how she would try and tolerate a green girl. She continued on. "I'm confused because my roommate is blonde!" After that sentence, she hurried to finish her letter with a few comments on how Nessarose was settling in, and how she'd fulfilled all her daughterly and sisterly responsibilities. She then sealed the letter in an envelope hoping to mail it that day, and settled down in a wingback armchair with a favourite book to whittle away the last few hours of the afternoon before dinner. On the other side of the room, Galinda then took out paper, and her pink sparkly pen. She began to write. Dearest darlingest Momsie and Popsicle, "there's been some confusion over rooming here at Shiz, but I'll rise above it, because that's what you've taught me to do. My roommate is unusually-and-exceedingly-peculiar-and-altogether-quite-impossible-to-describe!' She then wrote a little bit more, and finished the letter. After that, she left it on the desk to be mailed. She walked over to her bags and began to rummage through them, making sure she had everything. Both Galinda and Elphaba knew that it would be a while before they would tolerate each other because they had one feeling towards each other: Loathing.
The next day, both of the girls were crossing the courtyard to get to the first lecture of the day. Three other girls caught up with Galinda. "Galinda, you're just too good!" One of them declared. Another one asked "How do you stand it? I don't think I could." One of the boys proclaimed "She's a terror, she's a tartar, but Galinda, you're a martyr." "Well, these things are sent to try us." Galinda remarked. "Poor Galinda forced to reside with someone so disgusticified!' This comment came from one of the random students as they walked and gossiped about Elphaba. A couple of students were heading towards a different class when one boy called out. 'We just want to tell you, we're all on your side!' His voice echoed along the brick walls as the students disappeared around a corner and out of sight.
Elphaba was walking alone, and she realized that they were talking about her. She then got a mischievous idea in her head, so she snuck up behind Galinda. "Boo!" She yelled, causing Galinda to jump and scream in an undignified manner. Elphaba then smirked to herself as she took her seat in the lecture hall.
