When We Thought We Were Safe

We've been here for a long time. I stopped counting after the month ended. It didn't seem like it mattered to count anymore. I was bored. We all were. There was nothing to do except eat and watch TV. I wanted to go outside. Like actually run or something.

My room smelled like over used perfume, like I've been spraying it nonstop since we got here. Well, I have been spraying it everyday, but that's because it started to smell like dirt in my room.

And, I love him so much, but Ryan is starting to get on my nerves. He is constantly up my spine for everything I do. He's changed, like he's scared about something...and it is annoying me, but also worrying me.

"Kenzie, I don't think you should use your phone anymore," Ryan said walking into my room. I looked up to him and took a long hard breath.

"And why not?," I asked turning my attention back to my phone. I was bored, and the guys are stinking up the entire house.

"Because people could track us, I've been thinking about it for so long...you have to turn off your phone right now."

"That's funny Ryan, because I'm not going to be the only one without a phone in this horrifying place we have to call home!"

"Everyone's gonna have too," he said still not leaving the doorway. I just sighed into my pillow and turned off my phone.

"Can I have it?," he asked. My eyes grew wide as I threw it at his strong chest. He caught it and sighed. "I don't like how we are right now..."

"Me either," I grumbled.

"Well I'm just getting worried," he said. "I got a private message a couple days ago, and it said that someone was coming. It was a threat message Kenzie. I need everyone to be safe. Especially you."

"I don't text anyone, I just play games on my phone."

"I know but still."

I pretty much let myself go after that. Tears were running down my cheeks, and my cheeks turned that dark pink shade they always did when I was crying too much.

"Kenzie don't cry," he whispered walking over to me.

"I can't help it," I cried. "I wanna go back to your house and go to school and finish our last year together. I want to go to prom with you, and graduate with you. I wanted you to be with me forever and keep me away from my parents. I wanted to explore the world with you. Not live in this underground house that smells like dirt and worms."

He just looked to his hands and shook his head. "I'm so sorry," he breathed. "I didn't think about how you felt. I just wanted you to be safe from everything."

"I can't be safe from everything."

"I know that...but I was trying to keep you safe from everything, and now I'm being over protective and we live underground."

"Yeah."

"Do you want to leave? Find another state to live in, so we can go to a different school and finish senior year, and still go to prom together?"

"Yes."

"Okay, get your stuff. We'll leave. Let me go tell the guys what we're all doing now," he said standing up. I pulled him by his collar and pulled him down to me. I kissed him hard but full of love.

"I love you Ryan."

"I love you too Kenzie," he smiled. "But let me go tell the guys."

I followed him out of my room and into the living room where they were watching some horror movie.

"Guys," Ryan said snapping them from their attention to the TV. "I have to tell you guys something."

"What?," Max asked still not removing his eyes from the screen.

Ryan turned off the TV and threw the remote into the hallway. Yeah, that got everyone's attention.

"What???," Devon asked now clearly upset.

"We're leaving," Ryan said. "Get your stuff."

No arguments were made. They all stood up and ran to their rooms. I laughed and ran to mine as well. I was so excited to get out of here. I wanted to get out of this stupid place so bad. I was packing like I was on a rage. I was throwing my stuff in my suitcase and bags and not even caring if any of it was folded or not.

I felt two arms wrap around me and sway me back and forth. I closed my eyes and leaned back against his firm chest. Then, I continued to pack, I was too excited to leave. I was dying to leave.

"We're all done packing!," Noah said running into my room.

"Okay, you done Kenzie?," Ryan asked still not removing his arms fom my torso.

"Yeah," I smiled. "I'm done."

"Okay, let's go. I want to be out of here as much as you guys do."

Ryan walked to the front door and started walking upstairs. Of course he had to punch in the codes again, but who cares. We were leaving.

He punched in the last code to open the last door, then we were outside.

I was the second one to come out, and when I did, I looked straight into the eyes of a man with a gun. My father. He aimed it at my chest and fired without a doubt. Then he ran into his car and drove away with my mother in the passenger seat. I looked down at my wound. Right in the middle of my stomach. My eyes closed and I fell backwards.

That's when the world I just walked into again turned black.
