Over the days they practiced everything. All curses, jinx and charms. Only Slytherins were allowed. So far, Ares, Athena, Draco, Theo, Blaise, Daphne, Tracy, and a few older people trained everyday in the Room of Requirement. The older students taught them spells they didn't know and Ares and Athena thought them how to perfect the spells they already knew.
October extinguished itself in a rush of howling winds and driving rain and November arrived, cold as frozen iron, with hard frosts every morning and icy drafts that bit at exposed hands and faces. The skies and the ceiling of the Great Hall turned a pale, pearly gray, the mountains around Hogwarts became snowcapped, and the temperature in the castle dropped so far that many students wore their thick protective dragon skin gloves in the corridors between lessons.
Today was the first Quidditch Match, between Slytherin and Gryffindor. The Great Hall was filling up fast when they arrived, the talk louder and the mood more exuberant than usual.
The players received a rousing welcome at the Slytherin table, where everyone was wearing silver and green. The Quidditch players headed to the changing room and changed into their robes.
"I've found out the final lineup of the Gryffindors. Angelina Johnson, Katie Bell and Alicia Spinnet are the chasers. Fred and George are the beaters, Ron Weasley's the Keeper and Ginny Weasley's the Seeker. Ares, Athena watch out for Fred and George, they may be Gryffindors but I have to admit, they are very good beaters."
They could hear hundreds of footsteps mounting the banked benches of the spectators' stands now.
"It's time," said Urquhart, looking at his watch. "C'mon everyone . . . good luck."
The team rose, shouldered their brooms, and marched in single file out of the changing room and into the dazzling sunlight. A roar of sound greeted them.
They waited for the Gryffindor team too arrive and finally they did. Ron looked as if he was sick.
"Captains shake hands," ordered the umpire, Madam Hooch, as Angelina and Urquhart reached each other. Harry could tell that Urquhart was trying to crush Angelina's fingers, though she did not wince. "Mount your brooms. . .."
Madam Hooch placed her whistle in her mouth and blew. The balls were released and the fourteen players shot upward; Ares grabbed the Quaffle and sped towards the goal. Katie sped towards him and he quickly passed the Quaffle to Urquhart.
"— so, it's the first test for new Gryffindor Keeper, Weasley, brother of Beaters, Fred and George, and a promising new talent on the team — come on, Ron!" Said Lee Jordan.
But the scream of delight came from the Slytherin end: Ron had dived wildly, his arms wide, and the Quaffle had soared between them, straight through Ron's central hoop.
"Slytherin score!" came Lee's voice amid the cheering and booing from the crowds below. "So that's ten-nil to Slytherin — bad luck, Ron . . ."
"— and Gryffindor back in possession and it's Katie Bell tanking up the pitch —" cried Lee valiantly.
Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Draco zooming around searching for the snitch, and so was Ginny.
— and it's Urquhart again," bellowed Lee, "who passes to Athena, Athena off past Spinnet, come on now Angelina, you can take her — turns out you can't — but nice Bludger from Fred Weasley, I mean, George Weasley, oh who cares, one of them anyway, and Urquhart drops the Quaffle and Katie Bell — er — drops it too — so that's Ares with the Quaffle, Ares takes the Quaffle, and he's off up the pitch, come on now Gryffindor, block him!" Ares passed the quaffle too Athena.
"— and Athena's dodged Alicia again, and she's heading straight for goal, stop it, Ron!"
But Ron did not stop it, it headed straight through the hoops and Athena high-fived Ares.
But twenty-nil was nothing, there was still time for Gryffindor to catch up or catch the Snitch, a few goals and they would be in the lead, which the Slytherin's did not want. Slytherins scored two more goals and it was forty-nil.
"— and Katie Bell of Gryffindor has the Quaffle in possession. She throws it to Johnson, Angelina Johnson heading towards the goal. Come on Angelina, you can do it."
She threw the Quaffle towards the goal, but Miles Bletchley blocked it.
After sometime the score was seventy-twenty and they still hadn't found the Snitch. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Draco zooming forward, his arm stretched out. Everyone had their eyes on him, especially the Slytherins waiting for him to catch it. He caught the Snitch and closed his palm. The Slytherins roared in applause and the Slytherin team ran towards Draco and hugged him. This was the first time in so many years that Slytherins had finally beaten the champions, Gryffindor. Of course, they didn't have their star seeker.
"If we can beat Gryffindor, we can definitely win the House Cup." Urquhart said proudly.
"We can." Ares agreed.
The team headed back to the common room and they had a party. Urquhart snuck into the kitchen and took some food and drinks. The party lasted till the early hours and it would have still gone on if Snape hadn't come. He told everyone to go to sleep, and then walked out of the common room.
What Urquhart said was correct. If they could beat Gryffindor, they could beat the others too.
