December arrived, bringing with it more snow and a positive avalanche of homework for the fifth years. Draco and Pansy's prefect duties also became more and more onerous as Christmas approached. They were called upon to supervise the decoration of the castle , to watch over first and second years spending their break times inside because of the bitter cold, and to patrol the corridors in shifts with Argus Filch, who suspected that the holiday spirit might show itself in an outbreak of wizard duels. They continued training in the Room of Requirement as an when they could, and they would have to stop during the holidays because everyone would be going home. Ares and Athena had promised Sirius and Remus that they would come over for the holidays. Ares and Athena headed to the room for the final training session before the holidays. So far they had mastered most of the spells and were now focusing on dueling each other.
When everyone assembled Ares said, "Today will be the final meeting before the holidays. We will resume our sessions after the holidays." Ares put them all in pairs, and they dueled each other. Ares had observed everyone over the past few sessions and he had noticed that Draco and Daphne were exceptional duelers. Both were trained from a very young age, they were very powerful and were always the first to show the spell right.
Draco was paired up with Athena and Ares was paired up with Daphne. First up was Draco and Athena, both bowed to each other, turned took a few steps and then took up their dueling stances.
"Begin." Ares said.
"Expulso" Draco shouted and Athena easily blocked it and countered with a freezing spell. Draco dodged the ice and rolled and sent a bunch of stunners at Athena's way. Athena dodged all the stunners and returned fire with a Reducto. Draco brought up his shield and sent a Stinging Hex at Athena who sidestepped it. Athena conjured a bunch of birds and sent them at Draco, who tried to dodge them. Seeing that he was distracted, Athena hit him with an Incarcerous, followed by Stupefy and Expelliarmus. Draco dodged the binding curse but was hit by the stunning spell and flew backwards and fell down unconscious. Draco's wand flew in the air and landed beside him. Athena then walked towards Draco and used rennervate. Draco groaned and looked up at her an scowled.
"How are you so good." Draco complained.
"Quite whining Dray, and get up." Athena grinned and gave him a hand. Draco huffed but took her hand and got up and picked up his wand. Ares grinner and winked at his twin, who's face turned red but she smiled anyway. Ares took his position on the dueling platform and faced Daphne who gave him a smile. They bowed to each other, turned and took a few steps and got into their dueling stance.
"Ready?" Daphne asked.
"Ready" Ares nodded.
"Begin" Athena shouted.
Ares instantly opened with a strong Reducto. Daphne conjured a shield but the force was so strong that it pushed her back a couple of feet. Daphne struck back with the disarming charm which Ares sidestepped. She didn't give up and sent a bunch of spells in his direction, some of which he blocked with his shield while he dodged the others. Ares had to admit, Daphne was quicker and stronger than most of the other Slytherins.
Ares quickly followed with a disarming charm and a stunner. Daphne blocked the first and dodged the second retaliated with her own spells. Ares easily dodged them.
Ares used the same tactic as his sister, it was you could say their signature move. He conjured a bunch of butterflies this time and sent them at her followed by a stupefy and disarming charm. Daphne was very observant so she knew this was coming. She managed to sidestep the stunner but was disarmed. She gave a frustrated sigh and shook her head but smiled anyway.
Ares picked up her wand and handed it over to her with a gentle smile.
"Well thats the final duel of today. Merry Christmas all of you, enjoy the holidays and our sessions will resume after the holidays." Athena announced.
One by one all the Slytherins left the room and then then it was just Ares and Athena.
"Coming brother?" Athena said.
"Yeah I'll come just give me a moment." Ares said and Athena nodded and left the room.
Ares walked over to the corner and looked at the one thing he wouldn't see again.
The mirror of Erised.
He has seen it but he thought it was just his imagination, but it was truly there. The last time he looked at the mirror of Erised, he had seen James and Lily Potter who he thought were his parents, but actually turned out to be his Godparents. He wondered what he would see now.
He looked at the mirror and remember what Dumbledore said, "This mirror shows, the deepest most desperate desires of our heart."
He wondered what he would see now. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath and looked at the mirror.
He saw himself and his sister laughing and smiling brightly. Behind them were two adults. He knew these were his parents. Bellatrix Lestrange was a tall woman with long, thick, shining black hair. She had dark eyes, but while looking at her children, they seemed to shine. She had a beautiful smile that reminded him of his sister. Standing next to her was Tom Riddle, his father. But he looked a lot different than his usual snake like form. He looked, well, human, like the one he had seen in the chamber of secrets, but an older version of that. Tall, pale skin, but with a healthy glow to it. His eyes were a dark brown, but you could see a bit of red in them. He too was smiling, looking at his wife and children.
Ares looked at the mirror and smiled. This is what a happy family looked like. His family. Him and his sister had been trying to search for any clues about the whereabouts of their father. Ever since the Triwizard tournament, he had just vanished. His uncle, Lucius had also said he had not called them either.
"What do you see in the mirror?" A soft voice asked and he turned around to see Daphne. He thought everyone had left the room.
"I see my family." Ares answered, truthfully. Daphne was someone he could trust the most. She was a silent person, but when asked to speak, she would speak with a lot of confidence. He wanted to tell all of his friends who he really was. They deserved to know the truth. All he wanted to do was tell them. Athena too had wanted to tell them. Daphne was like her best friend.
He felt a tear roll down his cheek. All he wanted was for his family to be reunited and safe and happy. If it hadn't been for Dumbledore, his family would be together and his Godparents wouldn't be dead. Daphne saw his face and came in front of him and wiped the tear with her hand.
She held his hand and they both looked at the mirror. He didn't know why, but he felt calm when Daphne held his hand.
"Shall we go?" Daphne asked softly and Ares nodded. They took one last look at the mirror and headed out back to the common room.
