The sun shone down on me, merciless. It was consuming, burning. My skin prickled, but I didn't move. I had agreed to this. We would face this together and I wouldn't be left behind.
I stood there for a few minutes, feeling the warmth spread over me. Feeling as it slowly killed the boy I once was. A burnt smell reached my nose but I ignored it. I wouldn't be able to feel the sun like this in a very long time.
We would never be the same after that day. That day, we faced what we had become. And we became it.
My nose began to bleed, a warning if I stayed under the sun for too long. Still, I waited. The others would come for me soon. I could already hear their footsteps as I wiped my nose. This time we would rely on ourselves only. No more trusting anyone else. We had learned their smiles didn't promise anything.
But before all of that came to pass we had to face pain. Enough of it to drive us away. Enough to make us embrace what we had become: monsters.
