The Field

Last night, Levi Ackerman, the Captain of the survey corps and an untouchable, somber man, kissed me. He fell into a weak spell, in step with my own heart. He put his hands on me, his lips were on mine. he whispered in my ear and told me I was too much of a risk to care about.

Today, I open my eyes to the sight of sunlight coming through my window, illuminating the dust molecules in the air that danced from the movement of my linen blanket. I stretch, and catch myself smiling at the thought of Levi hooking his hands around my waist to close the gap between us. My mind carries it further in my head as I comb out my hair with my fingertips and gaze out my window.

Some birds chirp and the fresh, sweet breeze rustles the curtains. Behind my dazed eyes I see Levi on top of me, his body warm under the covers and in the early morning sun. His smile distracts me from the world around us, and his rough butterfly kisses along my neck send sparks across my skin.

My thoughts come to a complete halt when a hard knock shakes my door. I spring up, wrapping my robe around my body. I open it to find Mikasa and Sasha, eagerly telling me that now is my chance.

"What the hell are you two talking about?" I ask, rubbing my eyes.

"Come on, Captain Levi is getting the cadets ready for a mission outside the wall. We are scoping for the Titans that took down Wall Maria! You've gotta come with us!" Sasha says, taking my shoulders and shaking me back and forth.

"We need you, (F/N)." Mikasa says, adjusting her scarf around her neck.

"Do you honestly think I'm ready?"

"Yes. Meet Eren and I at the stables. We will give you your horse and gear. Hurry, (F/N)." Mikasa orders. Sasha hands me a donut from her jacket pocket then runs down the hall, unable to contain her energy. Mikasa follows in her own stride behind her.

I close my door and get dressed in tight, tan pants and a lilac colored button down that's nearly white from wear that I find in my dresser. I pull on the boots and run towards the stables.

When I arrive, Eren is holding a green cloak and the 3DM gear, while Armin is cooing a tall, black horse and holding it's reins.

"Armin, this horse is beautiful!"

"She's not used for missions usually, but she's fast. I put the saddle on, but you'll have to adjust the footholds yourself." He hands me the reins with a smile, and I fasten the cloak around my shoulders. I'm in full gear, mounting my horse to go kill titans. This is insane.

"The gear should work, it's new. And if anything happens, I can use my titan form." Eren confirms.

"That's not a good plan, Eren." Mikasa warns.

"Why not? It's much easier to fight that way!"

"Eren, if you're in your titan form, anyone can see you from far away. And if our enemy is out there waiting for us, you'll be a dead giveaway." Armin argues.

"He's right, Eren. I'm going to have to rely on myself. I'll be ok." I say with a smile, throwing the hood over my head so Levi doesn't spot me sneaking in.

We follow the crowd to the gates, and they begin to rumble and creak as they open, sliding above the stone over our heads. We file through, galloping into the open terrain.

"Stay close to us!" Mikasa calls to me as we gallop in formation into the field. There's the edge of the forest to our left, and more of an open field to the right. Straight ahead is the path to the old city that was taken over by titans. We don't plan to go that far, only just to see what's remaining in it's shadow. I know that much from what Hange and Levi are talking about as we watched the gate release us from the wall.

After a bit of riding out into the open field, the cadets slow down and draw their attention to Captain Levi and Commander Erwin, who is leading the mission.

"Listen up, cadets. Today is not the day to play the hero. Today, we assess the remains of the Attack on Wall Maria. If you see a titan and can ignore it, do so. If it's an abnormal, send the coded flare and have the nearest quadrant help you if needed. No one is dying today, understood?" Erwin's confident voice gives courage to the people sitting atop their horses. They cheer, and turn their attention to Levi. No one has suspected me yet.

"Don't you brats go off saving the day. Stay together and follow orders. There's a nearby abandoned village if we don't make it back by sunset, but lets try to avoid that situation. I'd hate to wake up surrounded by titans because you idiots can't obey orders." At that, Commander Erwin and Levi spin their horse's noses around, pointing in the direction the cadets will break off into. I stay with Mikasa, Eren and Armin, while some of the others go with Erwin's group. Sasha and Jean come along with us, too.

The wind knocks my hood off, and my face is exposed. I had been able to hold onto it while riding, but of course am caught off guard by the stupid wind. Before I could pull it back up, Jean sees my face. His eyes become angry and surprised. He grits his teeth, and eyes Levi for a split second. Mikasa pulls out her blade and points it at Jean, who again glances towards Levi, who has his back to us as he moves out towards the wooded area.

"Say a word and we will make it look like an accident."

"Fine." He grumbles, than kicks his horse into gear. We follow Levi into the woods, so far no sign of titans. They both said not to make a hero of yourself today, but if I get the chance to prove myself, I will. I don't think taking down any random titan would do it, but if someone was in danger. Of course I don't want anyone in danger just to prove myself, but I almost want to see for myself if I can really... belong here.

"Captain, 10 meter up ahead, to the right!" Sasha yells out.

"Avoid it. It's stationary for now. If it chases us, I'll take care of it." Levi says, unbothered, as we pass the titan. It's leaning up against a tree, watching us as we ride past. I can't help by make eye contact with it. Big ugly things, and nasty. But what's even worse is who they were before they were titans. The very worst part though, is that no one knows but me. No one knows how this story ends... but me.
