The Change

We ride until we can see the tunnel of light pouring into the forest from the break of trees ahead. "We meet back up with Commander Erwin just past the tree line." Levi commands us. We make it almost to the edge of the forest when the thought-to-be stationary titan comes barreling towards us from the side. Sasha screams as she pulls her horse away from it's path, making her horse whinny in frustration.

Without hesitating, Levi sweeps himself through the air. Mikasa guides the rest of us onwards as we keep going, and Eren catches the reins of Levi's horse as is gallops past him. Levi cuts his blade clean across the titan's nape and lands on a tree branch to catch his balance.

"You alright, captain?" Armin yells to him.

"I'm fine. See anymore that could be a threat?" He asks us, looking around from the high ground. Just then, another comes stomping towards us. Levi leaps off the branch and into the air, catching himself with the whir of his gear.

"Captain, behind you!" Eren yells out, seeing an abnormal titan crashing through the forest at us. It runs past Levi, heading straight for us.

"Get out of here, now!" He yells at us, spinning around to catch up with it.

"I can fight it!" Mikasa calls out.

"Just keep riding!" Levi commands. Mikasa huffs, but continues to ride with the group. Sasha's horse suddenly trips over something, causing it to fall to the ground. Sasha hits the ground hard, rolling across the dusty dirt path.

"Sasha!" Jean calls for her, turning his horse. Levi cuts in front of Jean, slicing the nape of the abnormal. Blood splatters across his face, and he lands gracefully on the ground.

"I told you to keep riding, brat." He says to Jean as he goes to pick up Sasha. "Can you move?" He asks her, kneeling down to lend her a hand. By now, the group has stopped running away. One of our comrades was down, and we weren't about to leave them behind.

"I hurt my leg... but I'll be fine." She says, using Levi to stand. She limps to her horse, who was able to stand up a few moments ago. "Horse looks alright, too. He's tough, like me." She pats the horse's nose, then hoists herself up. She winces, then straightens up with a determined look on her face. "Let's ride."

Levi nods, passing right by me as he mounts his own horse. He has no clue, does he? For a captain, I'd imagine he would have noticed me by now. You're slacking, Levi.

We reach the edge of the forest and meet back up with Erwin's quadrant. "Anything?" He asks Captain Levi.

"A few bastards, nothing more."

"Uh, excuse me?" Sasha says, offended and with a heavy handful of sass. They both look at her, Erwin confused and Levi annoyed. "I fell off my horse, and probably hurt my leg. That's something!"

"You're on your horse again though, are you not?" Levi says with a dry tone, then turns back to Commander Erwin. "It doesn't seem like there's any evidence we can bring back to the wall. We may as well turn-" He's cut off by rocks flying in our direction, taking down a few trees and one or two cadets. The wind blows past everyone, whipping our hair in our faces. I know who does that dirty trick. We're in deep shit, now.

We all turn to see a ghastly titan, bigger than any we've seen before leisurely walking towards us from the horizon. Everyone looks horrified, while I just glare at him. You can't have Eren, you big ugly brute. Not when I can stop you.

"Move out, now!" Erwin commands. We all turn, but I can deal with him. I don't care what they tell me to do, I know Zeke will understand me if I talk to hem. He's not a dumb, empty titan. He will hear me. Listen to me, probably not. But if I can distract him, maybe the others can get away.

I jolt the reins to the left, the opposite direction we're commanded to take. My hood falls from my head, finally exposing my face. Levi's eyes get wide and angry. I turn to give him a sly smirk, then kick my horse into a quick gallop towards the monster.

"(F/N)!!" I hear him call after me. That's the first time he's used it. I can feel my heart beating as Zeke's titan form gets closer. I dodge his second rock throwing attack, swerving around the boulders hurling through the air. The wind stings my cheeks and nose, but I just kick my horse to ride faster.

Suddenly, the air smells stronger. the wind feels heavier. The scene is changing. The world around me, once painted like a work of anime art, smudges across my vision. I get dizzy, and try to clench my eyes shut to make it go away. Is this it? Is my time up? Right now? Am I about to die and wake up?

I look down at my hands gripping the reins. Blood is staining the bandages I've been keeping around them until they fully heal. Then I notice every hair on my horse's mane. The pattern in the worked leather of the saddle, the blades of realistic grass getting trampled beneath my horse's feet. I look up into the real sky, no longer the painted cartoon world I was dropped into. It's real. Everything is real all of a sudden.

I touch my face and can feel the pores on my skin, the texture of my hair. I can smell the blood from my bandages and... Zeke. What a truly terrifying sight. A real titan, but not just any. The big, fury, fat, ugly one that causes the entire world to turn upside down. He throws one more handful of rocks at us, and I can smell the iron as they rush past me, debris getting in my eyes. I blink enough to get it out, and by now am so close to him now that I can abandon my animal and hit his pressure points.

I start with his ankles, spinning around them like how Mikasa taught me. I start crying in pure fear, screaming as I slice around his knees. He screams, and I bounce up to his shoulders. "Zeke, you bastard!" I yell in his ear. He turns his head, hovering his hand over the nape of his neck. "That's right, you four-eyed freak. I know what you want. Leave them alone or I swear to god I will kill you right fucking now!" He picks me up with his other hand, and I struggle to get out of his grip.

"You know me?" He asks, his voice low and almost not even understandable.

I snarl at him, then say, "More than you'd like. Now put me down!" I yell, gripping my blades tighter than I thought possible and spinning out of his grip, slicing his fingers like carrots for a stew. He screams, and I drop towards the ground, the very real ground. My gear is crushed and I have no way of getting myself to safety.
