Sakura looked for the twentieth time at the contract she had just won. It was kind of impossible to believe that she had finally dealt with this whole situation without her father's help.
It was like winning an Oscar on its own merits, she thought as she turned off her tablet, tucking it into her purse. She had only thirty minutes left to get out of the office and back for lunch with the senior partners.
"Luke, add Mr. Miyazaki and Mr. Honda for me right after my lunch, please?" Sakura asked as she passed the desk of her father's secretary, a young man barely twenty-three years old.
He smiled, nodding.
"Consider it done, Miss Haruno.
— Thank you, Luke.
Sakura was waiting for the elevator, while trying to concentrate on not getting carried away by her thoughts about how she and Sasuke had broken up the night before, when her phone rang inside her bag.
Grateful not to have her head hurt more than it already did from crying, Sakura read the name first before—with a sigh—putting her cell phone to her ear.
"Say it, Naruto.
"Sakura, I need you to fix a television now.
Sakura frowned, not understanding the worried intonation in his tone.
"I'm sorry Naruto, but I have a business lunch now and I can't be late for it." If it's because of the fight Sasuke and I had yesterday, you can forget about it because I'm busy.
- You fought?
- It is yes! He came over to the house, said he was going to Chicago and we fought again – silence. - Naruto? Hello?
"Oh dear, Sakura. Please turn on CNN or join the BBC, please, now!
- But...
— NOW, SAKURA!
Surprised by Naruto's aggressiveness, Sakura returned to the office, where the secretary was looking at her confused and grabbed the television remote, turning it on.
"What's so important, Naruto?"
— Watch it, girl.
But everything Sakura was going to say dropped out of her mouth the instant she noticed the red letters at the bottom of the screen. On television, a reporter was standing in front of some police cars, with yellow ribbons behind her as she said:
"Apparently, the heir of Fugaku Uchiha, Sasuke Uchiha, had an accident around eight o'clock last night. It's not known for sure why, but the police have information that says a car entered the side and in an attempt to swerve, the young Uchiha hit his truck. The car ended up being in the lake and was removed this morning. There are no signs of alcohol or substance use as far as we know. So far, there are only the hypothesis that it was a traffic accident.
Sasuke was taken away by the truck's owner shortly after the accident, but was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The police are still investigating the case and..."
Sakura stopped paying attention as they started to look back over Sasuke's life. Her hand was shaking and her face must have gone pale as Luke grabbed her arm, his face worried as Naruto yelled her name over the phone.
Oh, damn, damn.
They had quarreled.
He'd apologized to her the night before and... Shit.
"Which hospital is he in, Naruto?" she asked in a voice that sounded strange even to herself.
"Are you okay, Sakura?"
