Waking up to my mother leaning over me inspecting my nose with pure horror etched on her face was the last thing I wanted to wake up to today, but here we are.
"Tabitha Kilby, what in god's name have you done to yourself?!" My mother gasps, all forms of color drained from her face as her mouth hangs open and panic fills her eyes.
I stare at her grief stricken face with confusion as I search my mind for what she could be freaking out about.
Oh no.
I paid someone to stab me in the nose last night.
"Mom-" I quickly sit up as she paces around the room, her hands in her hair before she cuts me off.
"You are in so much trouble young lady. When did you get this?" She huffs, if she were a cartoon I'd imagine steam puffing from her ears.
"Yesterday." I admit. I've known my Mom long enough to know that when she gets like this there's no point in lying because it's just going to make things worse.
"I am so disappointed in you," She says, making sure to put extra emphasis on disappointment. "I don't think I can even look at you right now!" She throws her hands down by her side before storming out the room. Against my better judgment I scrambled out of bed quickly following her downstairs into the kitchen. I stop at the bottom of the stairs as my Mom stops at the opposite side of the kitchen island to my dad, who's oblivious to everything going on around him as he eats his breakfast.
"Notice anything new about Tabitha?" She seethes, raising her eyebrows at him and pointing at me.
He looks up from his breakfast, glancing between my Mom and I before studying me for a moment, "Umm?" He pauses having absolutely no clue, "She's taller?" He looks back at my Mom in the hopes he's right.
"No Steven, she hasn't gotten taller! She has a nose piercing!" She throws her arms down by her side in frustration.
He turns his head to look at me, scanning my face for a moment before his eyes fall on my nose. "Good lord Levi!" His lips part in shock as his eyes widen the longer he stares at the dainty piece of jewellery.
"What were you thinking?" My mom speaks up, her eyes burning holes into my own as she stares at me awaiting an answer.
"I've wanted one for awhile now and I'm 18 and paid with my own money and with permission from myself! I don't see the big deal!" I attempt to defend myself, It's not like I didn't know this was the reaction I'd get. But this is a decision I made on my own and I still stand by it.
"You look trashy! You look like a hooker." My mom seethes, crossing her arms across her chest, "If you expect us to love you when you go off and partake in foolish behaviour like this you're mistaken!"
"Monica!" My dad snaps, sending the room into silence, "Don't you dare speak to Levi like that!"
Both my mom and I stand in shock, staring at my dad as he goes silent after his outburst. My eyes shift between the two and I quickly notice the heat rising up my mom's face before she huffs out a breath, "I don't want to look at you." She smooths her hands down her sides before leaving the kitchen.
I look at my dad with tears in my eyes. I mean I knew they wouldn't like this decision but no longer loving me? I'm their daughter. "It doesn't look trashy." My dad breathes out, breaking the silence.
"Aw thanks." I laugh sarcastically before the room falls silent again. "Did she really mean that?" I pause, "About not loving me anymore?"
"No." He answers immediately standing up from his place at the counter, "She might be mad now, which she has every right to be, but she will never not love you. Neither will I."
