Levi Kilby
I wasn't expecting anything in particular when I sat with Harry and his friends last night but I was pleasantly surprised when they were weirdly nice to me. It's not that I thought they'd make fun of me or pick on me but the uncharted setting made me mentally prepared for the worst as I sat down. The three of them were so easy to talk to and I secretly envied the close knit friendship they had.
I learned they were in a band called 'Poster Kids'. To say I was jealous was an understatement. I've always wanted to go to a concert and be amongst the crowd singing along to my favorite songs. Granted I don't know many songs as that aspect of culture was monitored closely by my parents. When Drew found out I've never been to a concert before she was mortified, her face was similar to someone who'd just been told the worst news you could imagine. 'You've never ever been to a concert? Not even like the ones they hold in the park?' She later explained that she was the drummer, Zayn played bass, and Harry played guitar along with being the lead singer. They even invited me to go to their upcoming concert next week. I agreed to it way too quickly, I wasn't even sure if I had the balls to sneak out again. But my brain became instantly obsessed with the idea of someone wanting me to be somewhere with them, 'You need to come see our show' rather than 'I guess you could go if you want to'. It seems dumb but little things like that make me feel wanted.
"Ouch!" I cursed as I attempted to climb the large oak tree behind my house. If I climbed far enough I could easily get into my window on the second floor, so far that wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. I was standing on the ground jumping to try and reach the first branch. How I was expecting to be able to climb to the second floor? I have no clue.
"This isn't working" I muttered walking away from the tree and instead in the direction of the front door, slipping my phone out my pocket I noticed it was 4:36 AM. My dad doesn't come downstairs for work till around 5 AM but he would've woken up around 6 minutes ago so Levi I swear to god if you're hiding ninja skills I'm gonna need you to whip them out.
I step up slowly onto the porch, wincing as it creaks lightly below me. I quickly made my way up the other two steps, luckily the creaking lessened the further I went up. Looking around I try to remember where the spare key is, first I check under the legs of the bench, then the rocks down by the porch steps, then under the obnoxious welcome rug with a horribly done picture of Jesus smack dab in the middle of it. Almost as I'd given up I look up at the door then notice the tiny lock box under the doorbell.
Ah ha found you.
I smile doing a subtle victory dance at my discovery, "I mean seriously when did we have this, last time I checked the key was under the scary jesus mat" I mumbled, fiddling with the door of the lock box before realising it needed a code. Each number on the pad also had a letter below it.
"Okay so, J is 5, E is 3, S is 7," I look over the keypad praying my parents are this predictable and they'd pick this as their code, "U is 8 and S is 7"
Clicking enter, the lock box blinks back red, well it was worth a try. Racking through my brain I can't think of anything else, I genuinely thought Jesus was the only option. Next I try my birthday, 31st of October. I tap in the digits, 103100, the tiny circular light beams green and the lockbox clicks ajar. Reaching forward I pull open the box, revealing the tiny silver key with the keychain attached, surprise surprise there's a picture of Jesus on it. You're spotting a pattern with my parents aren't you?
Ever so carefully, I slipped the key into the lock turning it until I heard the small click. Gently pulling the door open the room is drowning in darkness, small streams of light peeping through the curtains being the only source of light. Tiptoeing inside I close the door behind me as lightly as I can before hearing the sound of shoes clicking against the wooden stairs. At the sound I quickly run over and hide myself behind the counter praying that I go unnoticed.
