Lost. There are different forms of being lost. When you're four and you wander away from your mom in the supermarket you become lost. When you're traveling and get the directions wrong you become lost. When you have no idea what is going on around you, you're lost.

I don't know this town or these people very well yet but one thing I do know is that I, Y/n Hargrove, am lost. Something is going on. Something that people aren't supposed to know. I don't know what it is, who all is involved, but something is going on in the shadows of this town.

I searched with the others as we tried to find Will. As we ran through the school we found a woman entering through the front doors.

"What's going on? Where's Will?" The woman I presumed was Mrs. Byers had asked.

"He's in the field!" Lucas yelled frantically as he emerged through the side door before leading the group of us outside.

"I just found him like this!" Mike yelled who stood with the boy in whom we were running towards. "I think he's having another episode!"

"Will! Will? Will!" Mrs. Byers said grabbing the boys shoulders. "Sweetie, it's mom! Wake up! Will! Wake up! Can you here me? It's mom, wake up!" She frantically tried to bring the boy back to reality.

Then there was a gasp. Wills eyes shot wide opened.

At school the next day I noticed that Nancy wasn't in first period. I thought maybe she wasn't feeling well or maybe she was just missing first period. But it wasn't until lunch when I realized that neither her nor Jonathan were here. Were they skipping together?

I understood that Nancy and Jonathan had been friends long before I entered the picture but I'm still kind of sad that they didn't invite me to skip with them. Now my school day wasn't just boring but lonely.

To the back parking lot I go. As I head out the back doors I come to a stop when someone is already sitting in my spot. Steve.

"I didn't expect to see you out here." I said moving past him and taking a seat next to him.

"I took your advice." He said.

"How'd it go?" I asked him.

"Bullshit." He said.

"Aw, the new running theme of the week." I joked.

"Nancy wouldn't listen and now she and Byers are skipping together." Steve explained. "I hate that guy."

"Jonathan?" I asked.

"No, Billy. He got into my head about Nancy and Jonathan." He said. "The guys a dick."

"Tell me about it." I said.

"What, you know him?" He asked. Was he really this dense?

"Yep. We've lived together for seventeen years." I told him.

"Oh shit. I'm sorry, I didn't realize he was your brother." He said.

"It's cool. I've never been much of a fan of his either." I told him. Steve was silent so I used his previous words to lighten the mood. "The guys a dick."

Steve gave me a half smile. "Yeah."

"I would say that he's better once you get to know him but honestly that's a lie. He just gets worse." I explained.

"Can I ask you something?" Steve asked.

"Shoot." I responded.

"Is there something going on between them? Nancy and Jonathan?" Steve asked.

"No." I said. "Not that I know of at least."

"Yeah. I can't help but think that there might be." He said.

I stood with Billy at his car as we waited on Max. We watched as she was talking to Lucas. It looked as though she was telling him off but I couldn't really tell.

"What's going on between her and that kid?" Billy asked.

"How should I know, Billy?" I asked.

"What, you don't do girl talks before you go to bed at night?" He asked.

"No, we don't." I said dumbfounded at his question.

Max was now skating towards us and Billy moved to the drivers side of the car. "That kid you were talking to. Who is he?" Billy asked.

"No one." Max said.

"No one?" Billy asked.

"Some kid from my class." Max told him as she climbed into the back.

I folded the seat back and climbed in. Billy lit his cigarette before speaking. "Why was he talking to you?"

"Just a stupid class assignment." Max said.

"Then why are you so upset?" Billy asked.

"I'm not." Max defended.

"He cause any trouble?" Billy asked.

"Billy, let it go." I told him staring out the window.

"Yeah, why do you care?" Max asked from the back.

"Because, Max, you may be a piece of shit but we're family now whether we like it or not." Billy said. "Now I'm stuck looking out for you."

"Cause you always looked out for me." I muttered sarcastically.

"What was that?" Billy asked.

"Nothing." I responded coldly.

"No, no. You think I don't look out for you? The Halloween party I told you to go home. That was me looking out for you. Remember back home when that guy Jared asked you out and then flaked? I beat him up because I was looking out for you. And then, when Adam-"

"Don't!" I yelled interrupting him. "Don't bring Adam into this."

"Don't raise your voice at me." Billie said.

"Don't talk about Adam." I warned him.

"Adam wasn't good for you." He said staring me dead in the eyes before turning back to Max. "That kid? He isn't good for you. There are certain people you stay away from in life. He's one of them. You stay away from him, you hear me?"

"Billy, you don't know what the hell you're talking about-" I tried to defend Max and Lucas for that matter but was interrupted when he slapped me across the face.

"Learn when to shut the hell up." He said glaring at me and turning back to Max. "Do you hear me? Stay away."

I turned my head to fully face the window as I placed my hand on my throbbing cheek. I looked in the mirror and made eye contact with Max. Her lips were slightly parted as she stared back at me. It was almost as if we were talking but without any actual words. A mutual understanding.
