הסדרה עוקבת אחר הרפתקאותיו של נער צעיר וחזק בצורה יוצאת דופן בעל זנב קוף בשם גוקו ביום אחד שהוא צד ביער ליד ביתו של סבו גוהן המנוח שמת שדרך עליו קוף ענקי בליל ירח מלא פגש גוקו את בולמה בעודה מחפשת את שבעת כדורי הדרקון. כדורים אלה, בשילובם יחדיו, יכולים להעניק לבעליו כל משאלה (משאלה אחת) שהוא חפץ בה גוקו מצטרף אליה כשומר ראש. לאורך הדרך הוא רוכש חברים חדשים, ואויבים, לאחר שמצאו את כל כדורי הדרקון בול גוקו נפרד מבולמה פואר ימוצ'ה והחזרזיר הסוטה הקטן הוא הולך להתאמן אצל קמה סנין/מותן רושי ושם הוא מתאמן כדי להיות הלוחם החזק ביותר בעולם.
