Everyone stood in the gym and listened to the trainers explain how to use the equipment. There was a ladder which led to these bars with rings to climb across, targets with laser guns and a bleep test station. Alexis and Clove got sent to the bleep test station first, and Terra got sent with some other girls to the climbing station. The bleep test was stressful but fairly easy. Clove moved round to the shooting station. Some brunette boy went in front of her, took ages, but then it was Clove's turn. She picked up the gun, faced the side and started aiming when she felt someone use their hand to adjust her shoulder back slightly. Clove turned around, a little pissed, when she made eye contact with a 6'2 blond boy with crystal blue eyes. "Are you an expert at this or something?" she asked. "If you move your shoulder like that-" he then placed his hands on her waist to rotate her slightly to the left, "and your body like that, it'll be easier to get the perfect shot. Try now." Clove was shocked at what she'd just experienced but she had to act like it didn't phase her. She shot the gun and hit about 2cm off of the centre. "Good for your first time, well done." The boy remarked. "I'm better at knives." Clove stated. "I'm Cato. Cato Hadley." He smirked a little. "I'm Clove. Clove Kentwell." She said, mocking his awkward last-name ego type thing. A well-dressed lady with a clipboard walked into the entrance of the room and called: "Cato Hadley, you are required at principals office now please." Cato shot Clove a miffed but unsurprised look and cockily walked off. Alexis grounded Clove again by tapping her on the shoulder, "Did Cato Hadley just flirt with you or did Cato Hadley just flirt with you?"
Cato Hadley was a 16 year old boy who moved to Clove's area of District 2 a couple of months ago, she had seen him around at school and he didn't have any trouble making friends. He was one of the most popular guys in the school already. He was a flirt and she understood that, she wouldn't let herself catch feelings for someone who so willingly talks to every girl in radar. Clove had never had a proper relationship with someone. She was only fifteen but the expectations to find young love were high. She had had her first kiss, but other than that she was a virgin. She didn't want to end up in a position where she was in love with someone her age and focused all her attention on them which could be spent training or, God forbid, was put in The Hunger Games with them.
The rest of the day went by quickly and it was soon 3:00pm. Clove tidied up her things from woodwork and waited for Dax outside of the science block. "Was your day okay?" Clove asked him. "It was alright. Biology was boring, all we learnt about were genetically modified animals. The capital uses those as mutts." Dax told Clove as they walked towards the training centre. "Yeah, I always preferred PE." Clove told him. She couldn't get her mind off of earlier and where Cato went after he was called to the office.
Dax carried on walking home, and Clove waved then walked into the training centre, as the centre was on the way home and as Dax was only 13 he just trained on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The air in there was always so cold and refreshing like taking breaths after a long run on a winter morning. Clove wandered over to the knife throwing station, as per usual, and set herself up to fight the AI virtual reality people. She pressed a couple buttons on a touchscreen stand and the unbreakable glass doors slid open. She stepped inside and swiftly tapped around her hips to check her knives were in the right places on her belt. The first bright orange animation built of cubes ran towards her. She threw a knife at its chest and it crumbled to nothing. This continued for about 2 more minutes from different angles representing different scenarios and she didn't miss once.
She finished the sequence and she pulled a lever to made the glass doors slide open, then hung her knife belt back on the peg placing each knife back into perfect position apart from sneakily sliding a small dagger she always kept in her bra no matter the place for protection if a situation where she required it were to arise. One of the few perks of being a girl. She grabbed her water to catch her breath and she saw Cato standing at the other side of the glass, sharpening his sword, but he'd obviously been watching her knife throw. They caught each other's eyes from across the glass as Clove was drinking and she giggled a little, making Cato laugh, look down and smile. Cato puts his sword back onto the rack and walks round to meet Clove. "You really are better at knives. Where'd you learn to throw like that?" Cato asked her, looking down at her with their about 1 foot difference in height. Clove put down her water and closed the cap. "I'm just a natural I guess. I started throwing when I was 11." She replied moving a few metres towards the mirror to re-tie her hair, Cato following. He stood slightly behind her, looking her figure up and down subtly. "Knife throwing is shooting but better. You get more satisfaction from it. Teach me sometime."
"Okay how about tomorrow evening? or Saturday?" she asked while tying her hair back up into a high ponytail and pulled out 2 front strands. She turned to face him.
"Tomorrow evening after school." Cato concluded. His eyes fell on her necklace. "Where'd you get that?" He asked glancing at it then back to her absorbing green eyes.
"It was a hand-me-down from my mother. Family heirloom type thing." She told Cato, as she pulled the necklace in front of her so she could see it too. "Why?"
"Thought i'd seen it somewhere, that's all. Is it a moon or a 'C'?"
"It's meant to be a moon but now that I look at it-" Clove said while twirling it around her finger. "Hey, Clove!" A familiar voice called from behind her. It was Alexis, she made it after the funeral situation. "I'll see you later, Cato." Clove said. He watched her walk away towards Alexis for a few seconds before heading back over towards his group of older careers at the spear station."Hey Alex, everything okay?" She asked as she reached Alexis next to the entrance. "Yes, the funeral service had to end earlier than expected to let people get home before the storm. I came here to grab my bag from yesterday and to offer to walk you home before it starts badly over here." Alexis told Clove.
"It's all good, get yourself home I can go myself. My house is only ten minutes maximum from here. I'll head home before the worst of it starts." She assured Alexis.
"Alright, suit yourself. Stay safe, okay?" Clove laughed and nodded. "Alex don't worry about me i'm fine. I'll see you tomorrow."
