The next day, all I did was basically buy a blue hoodie from an Erudite market. I only bought the hoodie, but it took almost all day, as practically everyone asked what changes I planned to make. I gave off barely passable answers and hurried out.
The day after that, however, came the first weird thing. Lori woke us up in the morning with a curt “5 minutes!" And tossed a stack of clothes at all of us.
“What's this?" Punzie mumbled sleepily, unfolding the clothes. A grey undershirt, white shirt and pants, a harness, belt and cargo jacket.
“Your classes with consist of training with each of the other initiates in the factions. Today, you will train with Dauntless." She said, then walked out and slammed the door behind her.
“Yes! Dauntless!" cheered Merida. She leaped out of her bed excitedly and hugged Hiccup, Punzie, and I. I rolled my eyes and changed almost as quickly as Merida. As we waited for the other two to change, my curiosity got the best of me, and I asked the Dauntless some questions as she tamed her hair into a braid.
“Hey, Merida?"
“Yeah?"
“What's the Dauntless initiation like?"
She thought about it for a moment, tying off her hair. “Because we only get a couple days a week with them, I think today we'll just do a little fighting and knife throwing practice."
I think the horror showed on my face, because she smiled gleefully, her crystal eyes twinkling. I was filled with relief.
“Ooh, you're just kidding." I said, smiling. She grinned back, and a sudden, ridiculous thought came through my mind. She looks really pretty when she smiles...
Only her next sentence made me snap out of it. “No, I'm not kidding. Actually, I'm fairly sure that's what will happen."
“Sure.." I said, getting up.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“Wait, you were serious?!"
“Toldja."
We had just entered the underground Training Centre, to find two initiates grappling, cheered on by those surrounding them. We all found a empty bench and watched the fight.
“Oh no! I hope they don't hurt eachother!" Punzie shrieked.
“I think that's the point, Punz." Hiccup said quietly. Punzie turned to look out him.
“That's the greatest nickname ever! Oh my goodness ! So cute!" She squealed. As she said that, one of the girls that was fighting left the ring and rolled her eyes.
“Ugh, Amity. So cute! " She mimicked, getting laughs from everyone around us.
“That wasn't very nice." whispered Punzie, tears threatening to spill over her lashes.
The girl laughed coldly and rolled her eyes again. “Don't be stupid. That was the idea."
Merida stood up abruptly. “Shut up!"
“Fight me! If you're Dauntless enough!" The girl hissed.
“I accept." Merida said. As she went towards the ring, I grabbed her by her jacket.
“You can't do this! This is crazy! What's-her-face is Dauntless!"
“First of all, Her name is Elsa. Secondly, I'm Dauntless too." With that, she pulled off her jacket, leaving it in my hand. Then she tugged off her shirt, leaving her in her undershirt and pants. There was a few fox whistles as she thrust it into the crowd and stepped into the ring.
“Aww...hey little ginger. Come back to play?" Elsa cooed. Merida remained calm but you could see her tense up. Then, without warning, she lunged at the white haired girl, slamming her palm against her temple.
Elsa blinked dumbfoundedly. It was obvious she hadn't expected Merida to actually fight. Merida took advantage of her stunned demeanour and swiped her legs from underneath her.
Elsa got up quickly and tackled Merida to the ground. She yanked her hair and pinned her with her legs. Merida kept struggling, so Elsa punched her in the mouth. The more my friend struggled, the more her opponent hit her.
I don't know what made me do it. Maybe because Merida was starting to get a black eye. Maybe because I saw the blood on Elsa's knuckles. Maybe even because the supervisor, Adam Beast, was elsewhere, so nobody could stop Elsa. But I jumped into the ring myself, peeled off my jacket, shirt, and undershirt, and tackled Elsa. She rolled off Merida and I pinned her down with my knees. She kicked me in the stomach and I shoved her off the ring. But it was just my luck: Adam came back from his little break.
“What's going on here?!" He barked. Elsa got up, saw Adam and collapsed back onto the ring.
“What happened to you?"
“Oh, Mister Adam! I was just in a fair fight, when Jack and Merida came up and attacked me!" Elsa said, and a couple others nodded their heads.
“Undesirables! Come here! Now!" Adam roared.
Merida strode right up to him, while Hiccup, Punzie and I slunk behind her. He looked us over carefully, his eyes resting on Merida and I particularly.
“Where are your clothes?!"
Merida grabbed her jacket and shirt, and pulled them on calmly. I, on the other hand, grabbed my clothes in such a haste that I didn't notice Elsa and her friends giggling over the fact that I was shirtless. Blushing, I ran back to Adam and pulled my clothes back on.
Adam turned to the others. “Initiates! We're starting target practice early today!" Then he turned back to us. “Get in front of the targets."
As we walked across the room, I leaned to Merida and whispered, “Aren't you scared?"
“Yeah," She whispered back. “You get used to that in Dauntless."
We got in place, and the initiates lined up in front of us. I paled to see Elsa get in the line in front of Merida.
“Now, as much as I know you want to," Adam said. “The point of this exercise is not to hit the Undesirables. Just get as close as you can."
I was extremely anxious, but it came apparent the initiates were too scared of Adam to hurt us. In fact, there were no problems for Punzie, Hiccup, and I, but when Elsa got to Merida. I couldn't help but watch out of the corner of my eye. She didn't seem to hurt her, but I noticed Merida wince. Unfortunately, Adam didn't notice, and dismissed the class.
Thus ended my first hectic day.
