"Wh-what?" I stare at Vanessa who was picking at the skin around her fingernails.
"Yeah. I mean, if I knew you were going to show up, I would have been able to cancel my flight. But it leaves at seven tomorrow morning," she says bleakly.
"You were too late," Caprice says, her head popping up from behind Vanessa, and I roll my eyes.
"Caprice? Can you leave Sean and I alone for a few minutes?" Vanessa asks.
"Yeah."
For a few minutes, both of us look everywhere but at each other. I knew that I had screwed everything up. I mean, just because my mom was diagnosed with cancer doesn't mean that I can just cut off all contact with her. Now, she's about to catch a flight to the other side of the country, and I'm letting her go.
"Vanessa?" I finally speak up.
"Yes, Sean?"
"Why are you going away?"
"There's a lot of reasons, but I don't feel like talking about them. Now, why are you here?" She closes the door, leaving both of us in the hallway.
"I need to explain everything. I didn't mean to cut off our letters.. something just came up and I'm sorry I did all of this without an explanation," I run my fingers through my dark hair as I feel her gaze on me.
"Let's go grab some smoothies and talk about everything, yeah?"
"Yeah," I agree, walking beside her and outside to the big city.
