She told him she loved him. And he didn't know if he could say it back.

What is love?

If he would go by the traditional definition...

Love is patient, love is kind.

Love is wanting the other person to be happy even if it didn't include you.

Then love was not what he felt for Mila.

It was not kind. It was not patient.

It would not allow her to be without him.

It suffocated him sometimes.

But he wanted it. He would never let go of her.

If there was a next life, he knew he would find her again. He would be with her again.

MATEO AUGUSTUS VIDAL

Mateo Augustus Vidal had always been an asshole.

Even as a kid, he had been a little too cold, a little too calculative, a little too selfish.

He had never been diagnosed, but it didn't take long for him to realize he was different.

While most kids would fight then make up the next day, Mateo Augustus Vidal would plot until he could get even.

He would wait. He would be patient.

But he would always get what he wanted.

He would always win in the end.

"Sir Mateo!"

He knew he wouldn't like what the woman would say even before his assistant opened her mouth.

"What happened?"

"I don't know the details yet, Sir, but it seems there's been a grenade attack."

A grenade attack. Muntik siyang tumawa. Whoever was behind it got some balls. And he had a clue who the man was.

"What hospital?" pakli niya sa assistant.

Mrs. Sarmiento rattled the name of the hospital as he scrolled down the names in his phonebook.

"Sir."

"How are they?" Dumerecho siya palabas ng opisina.

"Stable, Sir.

"Make sure Dennis gets the best care. Who else is hurt?"

"You've called my father?"

"Yes, sir. Kakatawag ko lang sa assistant niya."

"I'm on my way. Remain at your post." "Cancel all my appointments, Mrs. Sarmiento."

"Who's behind it?" pakli niya.

"It's still not confirmed. But we suspect Eugenio Badillo. We suspect the target was Julian Castello."

"I want confirmed names tonight."

Badillo.

Tama ang hinala niya. He had to give it to the old bastard.

But a grenade attack where a Vidal was present?

It was not only uncreative. It was stupid.

Mabilis siyang umiling at lumapit dito. Hinawakan niya 'to sa balikat.

"Stay in your bed, Mother." Binalingan niya ang lalaking doktor. "How is she?"

"She's got superficial lacerations on her arms and legs. Medyo mataas din ang BP niya. But other than that, Mrs. Vidal is fine."

Tumango siya. "Thank you, Doctor."

"Mateo, si Dennis!"

"I know, Mother. I will check on him now. Father is on his way."

"Dennis saved us, Mateo," tiim labing saad ng kapatid. "Don't let him die."

He wouldn't.

He would buy the best medical care available for the man who saved his brother and mother.

Failing that, he'd make sure the people responsible would follow Dennis in the afterlife.

No, isip niya habang naglalakad sa hallway papunta sa operating room.

The fate of the people responsible for the attack was already sealed.

He'd have them dead before the weekend.
