Grumpiness

Kestrel had just learned she was to be paired with Soar, and she was grumpy.

Yes, Kestrel was always grumpy, but this news made her extra - grumpy. Soar was the one SkyWing in the entire Sky Kingdom that was not crabby. In fact, every once in a while, he was actually cheerful.

This was a foreign concept to Kestrel, and it made her feel she needed to be cranky enough for both of them.

When Kestrel had first met Soar two years ago, she had instantly disliked him, due to the fact that - you guessed it - he was happy, and not grumpy, like any normal dragon would be. She had also found it rather strange that he had no battle scars. None at all.

Though Kestrel was not happy with Queen Scarlet for putting her with him, she went along with it, fearing the punishment of disobeying. And Kestrel was not a dragon who feared many things, but getting tortured by Queen Scarlet was at the top of her 'what I fear' list.

It turned out that the reason Soar did not have any battle scars was that he was a coward, who avoided the fighting as much as he could, and when he couldn't avoid it, he made sure he was never in the front lines, even going as far as pretending he was worse at fighting than he actually was to stay in the back.

The one time Kestrel was to fight Soar in battle training, she beat him easily, in less than a minute. Kestrel had to question whether he was actually a SkyWing, he was so bad at combat.

As time went on, Kestrel started to dislike him more and more, to the point where she tried to avoid him as much as she could (which actually wasn't much, due to the fact that she was partnered with him).

Queen Scarlet began to grow impatient. It had already been a year since Kestrel and Soar had been paired. Queen Scarlet began to make snide remarks, the most common (and the one Kestrel liked the least), being, "A loyal soldier would have had an egg already."

She disliked this because of two things. The first reason was that if you were not loyal to Queen Scarlet, you might die (possibly in a quite gruesome way). The other was that some tiny part of Kestrel wanted to be loyal. She wasn't sure why. Perhaps because she respected the Queen.

Unsurprisingly, not long after those comments started up, Kestrel was finally with egg.
