Waverly now had a similar decision to make. Should she leave Nicole and journey alone? But where? Where would Wynonna go? "My love, I think it's best if you remain here," she began. "I won't be gone long."
"I can't stay here," Nicole replied, panic escaping from her eyes. "I don't know anyone. I only know Xav. But he's with a fire breather." Confusion replaced panic. "There were flames. The cottage. Rabbits. Run rabbit, run rabbit, run, run, run."
Waverly stared at her. "My love, you hit your head. You need to rest."
"Did I? It doesn't hurt." Nicole felt the back of her head. "Are you sure?"
"I'll only be gone a little while. Here would be best."
"I'd rather stay with Xav at the keepsake."
"You're not making sense."
"He's gone with a fire breather."
"Xav is with Wynonna? Why didn't you say?"
Nicole stared back with vacant eyes. "Sorry, who?"
"Are you sure Wynonna is with Xavier? Nicole, how do you know she's there?"
"Someone told me."
"Who?"
"Trevor. Sorry, who are you again?"
Waverly let out a frustrated howl. "Nicole, concentrate. Who told you? Was it Trevor?"
"Blue pointy stick."
Waverly headed to the door, calling to the guards. "Is one of you called Trevor?"
The guard shrugged. "Don't know a Trevor."
"I need to find the man who knows of my sister, and Prince Xavier."
A knock on the door half an hour later had Treysta standing before them. He repeated what he'd told Nicole, Waverly less than pleased to have been kept in the dark about her sister's whereabouts. Nicole remained oblivious to what she'd done, her mind still trying to process what was going on. She neither remembered this world, nor the other, caught in a limbo land where she wasn't a ruler, or a taxi driver. And, whoever this woman was she seemed pretty mad at her.
"I'm going to Saker's Keep," she informed, after Treysta left their private chambers. "How could you?"
"I'm sorry," Nicole replied, unsure as to why she was apologising. "Where's Saker's Keep?"
Waverly ignored her question. "You know, I could have spent weeks looking for her. And you knew where she was."
"Sorry."
"Too late. I'm really cross with you."
"Sorry."
"Stop saying sorry. And stop giving me those eyes. Honestly Nicole."
"Can I come with you?"
"No."
"Please. I don't know anyone here. I don't even know who anyone is."
"I said no."
"Please, please, please. Plea-"
Waverly placed her hand on her hips. "You can't even shift. You have no idea who you are, and I'm too annoyed with you."
"Please."
Waverly let out another frustrated howl. "Fine."
A guard knocked on their door. "We found these in the dungeon," he said, holding out Nicole's knife, Landoryn, and Waverly's pearl necklace. She took all three, her fingers caressing the glistening pearls, remembering what Nicole had done to retrieve her precious piece of jewellery. How could she stay mad at her, knowing she risked her life for an item she hadn't seen for such a long time.
