"Jungwon?"
His brows arched at his name being called. He didn't think she'd remember him. He never expected to see her again. Especially here, like this. This was something he never wanted her to see.
"I can't believe it," Iseul said, "it's really you."
Too entranced by the moment, she reached a hand up to his face in an attempt to ground herself in the reality that she was standing in front of him after all these years.
He shifted away from her touch, flinching backwards. "What are you doing here?" Was the first thing that escaped his lips.
"I... I'm not sure..." she looked around only to be met with the darkness of the forest, "I heard this sound... was that you? What language was that?"
"That wasn't for you to hear."
"But I did."
He turned around, wanting to escape the situation, but she stopped him, circling him until their eyes met again.
"Is this how you're going to treat me? After all these years, I find you and you walk away?"
He only stared back, not sparing a word.
"Where have you been?" She had wanted to ask him that so many times over those long five years after he disappeared without a trace.
She could feel the air shift between them, his expression not as stiff after her words. It was quiet, and cold in the woods. The silence was getting hard to bear and she couldn't think of anything else to say, her heart on the line.
She had spent many nights thinking of where he had gone after he left the palace. There was nothing she wanted more than to leave too, and when he did, she couldn't understand her feelings.
He must have felt freed from the constraints of the court. Having to do as your told and following so many rules, it wasn't a life meant for him. She convinced herself that she was happy he had left, but in reality she wished she had been able to run away with him.
There, locking eyes, stood the person she wanted to see most in the world.
"I've missed you."
A rosy feeling ran through her body as she spoke. She didn't think she would admit that so easily. Then again, she never thought she'd see him one more time.
His eyes widened at her words. In the darkness of the woods, she couldn't tell how they sparkled in that moment, but as his lips parted to finally respond, the loud sound of a woman's voice pierced through their ears.
"Iseul!"
She turned in the voice's direction. "It's my mother. I have to go." She look back at him again, pleading, "I- I'll come back tomorrow. Promise me you'll be here."
He said nothing, but when she asked again, he nodded. She ran into the distance, disappearing behind the trees that coveted the moonlit forest, and Jungwon stood still, heart beating rapidly in his chest.
It was her. After all this time, he had met her again.
"Yoo Iseul."
