When Mom told me that, I'm not exactly shocked but I'm overwhelmed with curiosity about what happened to Dad. Obviously he'd gotten into an accident, but how? I can't help but shake this feeling that there's a reason. I walked back to the house, still in my PJs, and headed straight to my room.
I changed into a plain black T-shirt and some skinny jeans - I also grabbed a jacket because the the hospital is freezing cold - and headed into the living room where I was waiting for Mom with Samantha. Samantha had been wearing a cute blue shirt with Minnie Mouse on it, some leggings and a little white jacket. We were waiting forever for
Mom to be ready. Even though Dad had gotten into a huge accident, which I knew nothing about, Mom still had to look her best and take her time doing so.After about ten minutes or so we'd finally gotten into the car and made our way towards the hospital. I sat in the front seat next to Mom, and Samantha was in the backseat. Mom's face was smeared with makeup, - way too much foundation, bright red lipstick, and bright eyeshadow - I used to always ask her why'd she put so much on but she'd always tell me it's what girls have to do if they wanted to look pretty.
"Hey, Mom?" I asked as the ride was to silent to go on like this. "Yes, Mika?" She replied, her voice sounding tired even though it was only 10 in the morning. "What happened to Dad?" At about that same time Samantha spoke up as well. "Yeah Mommy? What happened to Daddy? Why do we have to go to the hospital?" She asked. Mom let out a big sigh and started to talk "When your father was coming back from work he was speeding and turned and hit a pole. Since he was speeding, right after he hit the pole the next car coming accidentally rammed into him on the drivers side."
She stopped talking there, but I couldn't help but feel there was something more to this story. That maybe, just maybe, she was hiding something. Our family's never been perfect, but at least my Dad tried. Mom's always sneaking off to a party and coming home drunk at 2AM expecting nobody to notice as Dad tried to drag her as quietly as he could into their room. Dad always working - he never had told me where he worked though - and coming home, but trying to find bonding time with his daughters. Unfortunately it doesn't all work out the way we want it to.
We were driving and my favorite band, Fall Out Boy, had just came on and I know I'm not supposed to be happy at a time like this but bands just did that to me. So I was singing and flailing around in my seat until the song finished. Mom just gave me a weird look and Samantha was laughing at me. "THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES EVEN THOUGH THEY WEREN'T SO GREAT!" I sang until we got to the hospital.
