Mom parked the car in the lot and we all got out, the ER wasn't the biggest of places but it was decent enough to be a place for people with an emergency to come to. I couldn't remember the last time I've been to an ER.
We walked over to the lady at the desk, who seemed to be doing something important on the computer in front of her. Nonetheless she looked at us with a bright smile and asked, "Hello, ma'am, how are you today?" I guess that's what you had to do to keep the atmosphere positive in a place like this.
Mom ignored the kindness in the lady's voice and replied roughly with a grim look on her face, "I'm fine. I'm looking for my husband that came in not to long ago, his name is Michael Thomas."
"Hold on one moment.", the lady replied her smile gone. "Have a seat, please, I'll call you back once I find out what room he's in." We all sat in three of nearest chairs to us. The chairs were patterned, one was purple, the next green, and the final one blue. After about only five minutes of waiting the lady called us in so we could finally see Dad.
***
The lady had led us to Dad's room. She opened the door and soon as I saw him I was the first to hug him, then Samantha, but Mom only stared at him. When I stepped back to get a better look at him I saw he had a cast on his right arm and both his legs. There were also stitches near his right eye, but there was also a smile on his face.
"How're you feeling Daddy? Does it hurt?" Samantha asked unknowingly. "Just a little, Sam." He replied with a small smile. "Aw, but I want you to feel better." She pouted and gave Dad another hug. I'm pretty sure he flinched, but he didn't tell Sam anything.
Dad looked at Mom for a few seconds then said "Honey, can you go out and ask the doctor if I can get some water?" I looked at Mom. She hadn't said a thing to Dad, or even so much as stood near him since we walked in - she just stayed as if her position was to stay by the door. "Sure thing." She answered with a little fake smile on her face.
What is going on between these two?
As Mom walked out the door Sam followed, but I stayed in the room with Dad. I had this feeling he wanted me to stay for some reason. I sat in the bedside seat next to Dad and just sat awkwardly next to him. Dad spoke finally.
"Mikaela I know you probably have a million questions about what's going on. Why you're mother and I are acting so distant. How the quiet street we lived on suddenly had an accident. And so many other things."
He wasn't wrong. I had been thinking all of these things, but I wasn't sure that I wanted to know. Then again, how did he even come to figure out that I was wondering all of this? And why all of a sudden?
He continued, "But there's only so much I can tell you. Before..." He paused for a moment. "Before... I'm gone."
