-In a human version, Buster Moon would have a niece, on his sister's side, and she would become not only the show's choreographer, but also Johnny's romantic interest.

Buster Moon owns a struggling theater, and is threatened with a mortgage by bank representative Judith. He decides to hold a singing competition with a prize of $1,000, but a typo by his assistant Mrs. Crawly adds two extra zeros to the prize money. The poorly printed pamphlets are blown out the window by a fan before they can be reviewed, and float around the city.

Buster receives a visit from his niece, and asks him to help organize the show. Anthony has traumas that she wants to forget, so the girl decides to go to study dance in another country, but when she sees her uncle begging for help, due to her talent, she demands that if nothing goes right he buys another plane ticket for her.

Crowds of people gather for an audition, Anthony arrives halfway through the auditions and is able to see Johnny perform, which she recognizes as the voice she heard in the alley the day before. Teenager Meena can't sing because of nervousness and is taken off stage by Mike. Buster soon selects his competitors. A trio of dancers, teenager Ash is chosen but Buster rejects Lance, the girl's boyfriend and bandmate. Among the choice of soloists are Mike, opera singer Pete, one of the selected seems to have stomach problems with nervousness and Anthony can barely hold back her laughter, until her uncle chooses Daniel, but he soon changes his mind, seeing a problem communicating with the young man, and dismisses him by accepting Johnny. Anthony can't contain her excitement at hearing this, and although it was low, Buster heard and noticed his niece's presence. Rosita is the last selected, but as Buster believes something is missing, he doesn't dismiss her and proposes a partnership between her and Gunter, which is the very excitement on stage.

After Mike asks about the prize, Buster discovers that the flyers advertise a $100,000 prize, nervous about the mistake he tries to avoid the truth problem. He even asks his friend Eddie to complete the prize money, but he refuses and even suggests that Buster sell the place and change direction. Buster tells the story of how his father worked to buy the theater for him, Eddie is impressed by the late man's dedication, and Anthony even remembers her father, whom she even calls "the best dad in the world". Uncle and niece live a momentary nostalgia. Buster decides to ignore the mistake and encourages the contestants to rest for the next day. Neither Eddie nor Anthony agree with the idea for lack of money, although Buster says he'll fix it. Eddie believes it's the bottom of the well and Anthony reinforces how deep the well is, but Buster says that from the bottom of the well you can only go up.

Pressured by her grandfather, Meena tries to ask Buster for another chance. Meanwhile, Ash has trouble coming to terms with her boyfriend, Mike tries to impress a girl who frequents a nightclub where he plays nearby, and Johnny is given the assignment to be the new getaway pilot in his dad's gang, and though he said be the last robbery, the boy is not excited. Rosita tries to hire a nanny for her children, but the nanny doesn't accept it due to her not being willing to take care of so many children, and Rosita also can't talk to her husband. So she creates an elaborate machine that can replace her in the chores and leaves for rehearsal.

At the theater, Buster shows the contestants his ideas of what they should do in their performances, and Anthony laughs at the idea. Buster takes the moment to introduce his niece. Johnny laughs at the girl's name being a man's name, but when she counters the joke, saying his is a fag name (sorry if anyone is offended), as he denies it because he's sure it's not like that, the girl then tell him to shut up. The others laugh at the teasing, and soon Anthony explains that her first name is Ebony, but no one other than her parents called her that. Johnny feels bad about what happened and Rosita is willing to call the girl Miss Andrew, which is her last name.  Buster announces that Anthony will arrange and choreograph the show, which angers Mike who believes the girl is too young to know anything professional. Johnny isn't sure if it's a good idea for him to play the piano since he hasn't done it in years, so Buster puts him to learn from Mrs. Crawly. Unfortunately the light is cut off and this makes the rehearsals stop. Trying to solve the problem, Buster meets Meena who tries to ask for another chance, but ends up becoming his stage hand. Meanwhile, due to Buster pulling a wire to get power from the nearby store, Mrs. Crawly ends up getting stuck on it, which Johnny only notices when Anthony catches his eye. As they try to untie the Baba-Yaga, (nickname given by the girl who knew her since she was a child and the woman was already old) Anthony asks Johnny to hold the thread while she takes the old woman out of there, but ends up losing her balance and is held by the boy who was behind her. What creates a slight tension appears but no one notices or simply ignores it.
