Helicopter Hijinks

Not once during that conversation had the word "helicopter" been mentioned. Yet here you are, hundreds of feet in the air, flying in a military helicopter, and hoping you wouldn't get motion sickness from all of the swaying the pilot was doing.

The pilot does a sudden sharp swing that makes you hold one hand to your tumbling tummy and the other holding on to the bar above your head to keep yourself balanced.

"You alright there, gumdrop? Ya look a little nervous."

You tear your eyes away from the window where the barren scenery is flying past at an alarmingly fast rate to look towards whoever was directing their voice at you.

It was another recruit, a girl with black and white hair pulled back in a high ponytail and a dark baseball cap pulled low on her head. Wow, she looks tough, you thought. She is just as muscular as the men sitting on either side of her, maybe even more so. She smirks when your eyes meet, and you can't help but notice that she and her companions seem to be laughing at you.

You try for a friendly smile at the group of what you think must be other new recruits. It's difficult to smile when you're nauseous.

"I've never flown before," you admit with a nervous laugh.

"Yeah, we couldn't tell," the girl guffaws before she and her friends burst into fits of laughter at your expense. The girl wipes a tear from her eye and then mimics the way your holding onto your stomach. "Ooof, I'm gonna hurl!"

You feel your ears burn with embarrassment and anger as the recruits continue laughing at your expense. You're thinking of some sassy retort when the helicopter jerks again. The rest of the recruits quickly grab onto their seats to keep from falling out of them.

"Hey!" the black-and-white-haired girl shouts at the pilot while shaking her fist. "Learn how to fly this thing, will you? S'not like there's any traffic up here ya gotta be dodging!" She sits back in her seat, pouting angrily.

She looks up and finds you smirking at her.

"You're not scared, are you?" you tease, making her face flush with embarrassment as her buddies chuckle and elbow her.

"Hmph." She folds her arms and glares at you. "What's your name, Shortstuff? The gang I used to roll with called me Gruesome, Gruey for short."

"Didi," you reply, smiling. "Good to meet you!"

Gruey snorts and looks away from you. "Cool. Now I'll know what name to use when our captain needs to identify your corpse."

You startle. "Wh-What?!"

Obviously happy to see that she'd gotten under your skin again, Gruey grins evilly at you. "Have you looked at yourself? You're smiling like a dope, and you've got arms thinner than noodles. There's no way you'll last more than a few days at war."

Before you can respond, there's a sudden loud explosion from the front of the helicopter that rocks the entire aircraft. You only manage to catch a glimpse of smoke and fire coming from the cockpit area and the pilot's charred body before the helicopter begins to spiral out of control.

Everyone panics. They struggle to stay upright in their seats, but when the helicopter's doors slide open and the wind begins to push in, it's a lost cause.

"Ah!" You're whipped out of your seat but manage to grab one of the metal bars that's affixing the seat to the floor of the helicopter. You watch in horror as one of the recruits slide past you, screaming, and tumbles down towards the orange terrain.

You manage to pull yourself back up, only for Gruey to shove a parachute into your face.

"We've got to jump!" she shouts. "Someone's blasting at the heli; we're not gonna last up here!"

"O-Okay!" you yell back. You take it and quickly strap it onto your back without a second thought. You're on your knees, hugging the side of the chair to keep from getting too dizzy as the spiraling continues. Peering over the edge of the helicopter, you can see the ground getting closer and closer.

"Oh my gosh," you mutter, squeezing your eyes shut. This is a nightmare, you think. When you open your eyes again, you realize you're the only one left on the aircraft--besides the dead pilot. Alarmed, you force your legs to stand. "Okay.... I can do this!" you tell yourself as you step closer and closer to the edge. After taking a deep breath, you step over.

You bundle youself into a ball and scream as you plummet towards the ground.

Oh, right! You've got to deploy the parachute! But how do you do that?

You unfurl your arms and try to feel around on the backpack for some sort of ... deploying mechanism? After pulling and yanking on whatever you could find, the parachute explodes out of its container. It billows behind you in a stream of white before catching the wind and opening fully.

You slowly stop your screaming and dare to open your eyes. The ground, which had been approaching at a crazy high speed, was just a couple dozen yards away now, coming at you at a much less alarming rate. After taking a few deep breaths to bring your heart rate down, you extend your legs beneath you and land feet-first. The parachute collapses over you.

You grunt and fight your way out of the fabric then look around at the barren, dusty wasteland. Not a soul was in sight. You stumble a few steps away from your deployed parachute but your wobbly legs fail. You fall to your knees. After retching a few times, you shakily climb to your feet. Cupping your hands around your mouth, you shout, "Hello! Is anyone else there?"

There's a .... whizzing noise above you?

You look up just in time to see the helicopter spinning its way down towards you. With a yelp, you run as fast as you can away from it. A few meters behind you, the helicopter crashes into the earth with a fiery explosion.

You duck behind some rocks to avoid the flying scraps of metal. Not bothering to look back out at the wreckage, you stay in the shadows with your back against the rocks. Your chest is heaving and forehead is covered in sweat.

Just when you thought you could relax, the ground begins rumbling. You hug your knees to your chest and dare to peek out from around the rock.

There is a tank approaching you.
