"You sure you wanna embarrass yourself like this, cupcake?"
You tie the camoflauge scarf around your head and smear two streaks of black dirt above your cheeks before climbing back to your feet. Yes, you love being extra. Besides, this is getting kind of fun. You smirk at Captain.
"You sure you won't be the one embarrassed in front of all your little groupies?" you tease, gesturing around at the cheering fanboys standing on the sidelines.
In the crowd, Steve stops cheering and glances at the soldier next to him, who's wearing the same "WE LOVE YOU CAPTAIN" tee as he is.
"She's not talking about us, is she?" Steve asks, smiling obliviously.
Excited, Captain tosses his cigarette to the side and grins at you before pointing towards the obstacle course his men had set up earlier that morning in preparation for the duel.
"Alright, girly! First one to the end of the course is the winner!" he declares. It's clear from his smug grin that he knows who the winner's going to be.
Not you, obviously.
You gulp at the high walls you'd have to scale and the swinging pendulums of death. Getting struck by one of them or slipping and falling was going to be very, very painful. You fight away the shiver working its way up your spine and instead get into the runner's pose.
"Remember: you and all of the soldiers are getting involuntary check-ups if I win!" you remind him.
"BOOOOOOO!" the soldiers roar at you.
"IT'S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD!" you yell back, dodging the beer bottles and trash being thrown your way and shaking your fist.
"And if I win..."
Suddenly, Captain is right beside you He's stooped down so that he's at your same level, and he's close enough that you can smell the lingering scent of smoke on his lips. He leans closer so that his mouth is right beside your ear.
"You know what I get." You can almost hear the smile in his voice.
