Based on the votes, you're gonna speak up for youself and the others! Was this the smart thing to do...? Let's find out....
You're absolutely fuming. Captain's infuriating, sputtering guffawing is like nails dragging down a chalkboard to you.
How dare he?! Really, how dare he make fun of these people who managed to survive a horrific helicopter crash—caused by one of his trigger-happy, poorly-trained, and apparently hangry soldiers—and treat your group like you're at some kind of ... you don't know, comedy club event? Like you weren't here to help him win a war? What kind of army was he running here?!
You sharply raise your hand in the air. Captain wipes at his eyes, which are tearing up from laughing so much, and tries to catch his breath so he can respond.
He nods at her. "Woo, one second. Alright ..." he wheezes. "Go ... go ahead, grandma hair." He points at your bob hair cut and continues giggling to himself.
You square your shoulders and fold your arms over the front of your black T-shirt. "Excuse me, sir, but what exactly are these 'high standards' that we're supposed to be meeting?" you implore. You throw as much sarcasm as you can into the words "high standards", and your sassiness gets to Captain as you see him sobering up somewhat. "...Because the first 'soldier' who I've met so far--trained by you, I'm assuming—shot our helicopter down and then proceeded to treat me like I'm a war criminal!"
You feel your confidence rise a bit when Captain's jeering smile falters. He straightens up and puts his hands on his hips, looking at you with that loathing frown you were probably gonna be seeing a lot of.
"So excuse me if I'm not too worried about Gruey's admittedly emo scene hair," you retort, which earns you an unhappy glare from Gruey. Ignoring that, you continue, "or if I'm not worried about someone having a little extra meat on their bones when it comes to judging if they're going to be a competent soldier or not. I think we'll be just fine, thank you!"
Even without your glasses, you can see the corners of Captain's mouth pull into an even deeper frown, and for a second, you think he's going to go off on you. You half-hoped that you standing up to Captain would allow the other recruits to open up and stand up for themselves as well, but they're completely mute at the moment. Gruey is examining her nubby nails like they're the most interesting things in the world while the other recruits are staring at the wall, their feet, anything but you. Swallowing, you force yourself to look back at Captain.
Unfortunately, while you had your eyes on your fellow recruits, Captain moved closer to you and is now in your face when you turn around. You make a little "eep" noise and draw back slightly as he hovers over you. Your back touches the wall as you press against it, eager to keep your nose from touching Captain's.
PERSONAL SPACE! HYGIENE! Your head is screaming as your eyes dart from left to right. What was he gonna do to you? Maybe you should learn to keep that attitude of yours to yourself....
After scanning you from head to toe as you squirm, Captain's lips twitch into an appreciative smile. You blink in surprise.
"Heh," he snorts and shakes his head. "Wouldn't have pegged you as the one to try and stick up for this little loser squad. I might even be impressed ... if you weren't so freakin' annoying."
After smirking at you for another beat or two, he pushes away using the wall behind you. You sigh with relief and sag back onto the bench as much as you can without it being too noticeable. Having someone all up in your face who's good enough at killing to become a captain is not a great experience.
