We had almost gotten to the safe house but after the argument and the painful, wailing cries of a lady diying, we all walked slowly and in a daze. I didn't know why all of a sudden lacy and Troy had gone dead quiet but to be honest it was pretty nice to just hear the sound of wind brushing through the trees. I know I'm an asshole for thinking that but back home it's all noisy and electronic. Not like here.
Here was peaceful.
At least to me. Maybe because I had a home to go back to, or because I hadn't had to live out here by my self just trying to stay alive.
My eyes lit up when I saw the old broken down cabin covered in shrubbery. To anyone else it was barren and smelt like shit, but knowing there was a bunker under it, I couldn't have been happier.
"Is that it?" Lacy asked weakly.
"Yea! We made it finally," I said overjoyed. Maybe a little bit too much.
"It's a shity pile of wood," she spat ungratefully.
"Trust me, it's better on the inside," I grabbed troys hand awkwardly and pulled him towards the cabin leaving lacy to trudge behind us.
I pushed open the door with a little trouble and pulled out my flashlight. The house was easy and covered in plant life. It smell of mood and had broken chairs scattered about. I searched the two small rooms and when I found nobody squatting, I called to lacy and Troy to come in.
"Like I said, a shity pile of wood, " lacy said under her breath, "we've squatted in better places than this."
"Just wait," I said annoyed.
I put my pack down on some grass and searched for the key. It was an old type of lock, put in before everything happened. I guess they were prepared for some sort of nuclear war because damn, was it well made.
When I found the odd key I pulled up some floor boards in a far left corner. They made a loud breaking noise as I used all my muscles to rip them out. Lacy was watching the door, just in case someone saw us and Troy was sitting beside me holding a wooden plank.
Troy reminded me of myself a bit, I mean I wasn't autistic but I was sure quiet as a kid. I guess he was like a little brother I never had.
"Shit," lacy cursed, "Stop doing that. I see deacons!"I froze and turned around to see lacy with her back to the wall and some sort of weapon in her hand. I got up slowly trying not to make a sound and moved towards the window.
"What are they doing?" I asked obviously knowing what they were doing.
The two men were sucking on each other's faces for dear life and laughing. They seemed to be having fun and I almost burst out laughing when they started to grab each others butts.
"Shit, shit, shit," Lacey whispered, "They're coming this way! We need to hide."
I nodded and started ripping out the boards faster and faster until there was a little crawl space that lead into a small tunnel under ground.
"Down here, hurry," lacy grabbed Troy and I helped them down. Then I grabbed my pack and threw it down to them but it hit the floor with a loud thud.
"ca c'était quoi?" One deacon asked startled and I could here the buzz of their tazar-gun as they made their way towards us.
I quickly jumped down the hole and covered the opening with some debris just as the door swung open.
We all held our breath and listened carefully as the deacons footsteps made the floor creek. It was incredibly dark and dusty and I could feel something crawling up my arm, but I couldn't move.
We stayed like this for almost 5 minutes before the deacons decided it was an animal and started making out again. We sat in darkness, listening to the awkward grunts and moans of the men.
I was just glad it was dark so we didn't have to look at each other while the deacons we're going at it.
It was very awkward and I could tell we'd be here for a while.
