Lacy
I pulled my sleeve over my cold hands and rubbed my eyes. Troy was sprawled out on the dusty ground with his head in my lap. I ruffled up his brown hair and smiled at him. I was groggy and felt someones eyes on me.
"What?"
"Nothing," He laughed, "Its just, you two are so cute."
"Okay, cool." I rolled my eyes, yawning I asked, "What time is it?"
"Dunno, but the deacons left an hour or two ago,"
"How did you-what was that, last night?" I spoke quietly.
He just laughed and looked away from me, "You sound like we just had sex or something."
"Eww no," I felt my face heating up so I looked away at the wall with the hole, "I just. I meant about the-the thing. The wall spray stuff. You-are you?"
His face dropped and there was an awkward pause. I knew I hurt him but honestly, he almost killed me twice and Troy once. What was he thinking?
"Sorry," I hesitated, "Just, if you are..."
"I was," he interupted, "Just, not anymore. Okay?"
"Why?" I was walking on thin ice and I knew it but as long as we were in this awkward triangle room I was going to get answers.
"I don't need to explain myself to you or anyone,"
"You know what, I think you do since you hit me with a fucking 100 pound metal door, used that shit to built up the wall that almost suffocated me and my brother, and your a stranger that is helping us for no reason!"
"Maybe your right or maybe I should just leave you two here to die in the freezing cold with nothing!"
"That was probably your plan anyways! Help us and take everything we got!" We were yelling now were moving closer and closer until I could see every single pore and scare and felt his breathe on my face. My heart was racing and our mouths were rapidly moving, spitting words right and left until...
"Aahhhwah,"
"Troy! I turned around, he was in full panic mode and I jumped up and pressed him tight to my chest rubbing his arm.
"Sorry," Jay scratched his scalp.
"Just-" I started, "Me too."
He stood up, brushed off his dusty jeans and picked up his duffle bag. He was searching through it rapidly. He pulled out a hammer type thing and the chisel from before.
"Here," he handed me the hammer thing and sensing my confusion he explained, " I found it a while ago, it works pretty good for taking down walls."
" Why didn't you use this last night to make the hole?"
"It would have taken down the whole wall," He stated, "Just start hitting the it."
"Fine," I took the hammer and gave him an annoyed look.
I started chipping around the hole for almost 5 minutes before anything fell off. Troy had calmed down and jay was beside me trying to start a new hole. I was sweating even though it was below zero and the air stung my lungs when I breathed. We had been working in silence for twenty or so minutes before i got so fed up I kicked the wall and it crumbled. Everyone started hacking and coughing because of the dust. I covered my eyes and waved it away. When the air had cleared I walked into the pile of rubble into the other room. It was a huge room, I mean huge! I think they used it for packaging, I mean there were convayer belts spread out in lines across the room and weathered boxes in the corners.
"This place used to be a factory," Jay stated, " The boxes-"
"Checked them already," I said as I helped Troy get over the rubble, " Empty other then some bottles of perfume and soap. We only took the soap."
"Damn," Jay frowned picking up his bag and allowing us.
"Wait," I stopped, " Over there- those weren't there before."
Jay and I looked at each other and walked towards the metal containers. We jumped over a conveyer belt and I almost clipped my head wound.
Jay had stitched the gash up like a surgeon. I mean it was already scaring over and I felt fine. He probably had training when he was one of them - a valid, and he probably used some sort of medical spray to fix it. Ugh I hate them and their sprays for everything. Why couldn't they make a spray to help my parents! Or why did they drop the bombs in the first place anyways? I wiped my eyes before the tears fell.
"You ok?" Jay touched my arm lightly.
"Fine," I moved away awkwardly. I kept my eyes on the metal box and looked for a way to open it.
"Here," He pulled out another spray bottle.
I just looked at him annoyed and stood back as he sprayed the top of the stainless box. A small keypad appeared and he got to work typing random letters and numbers.
"Okay, so your like a genius?" I laughed, " Wow, don't know why you'd leave the cityscapes for this."
"I- just not right now." He hissed.
"Sorry," I threw my hands up, " Hey Troy, what are looking at?" I left Jay and moved towards Troy.
He was looking at the conveyer belt. I wish I knew what he was thinking. Having a mute brother with extreme autism, no parents, and living like shit - how did we get here? Why are we here?
"Got it," Jay grinned, "Oh my God - look!"
I walked towards him and peered over his shoulder, " Holy shit..." There was food and water and money and medical supplies... "No sprays?" I questioned confused.
"Aha I guess not," He rummaged through it, "You said it wasn't here before... where did it come from then?"
"No clue but i'm keeping it all," I knelt down smiling for the first time in basically forever, " So I don't know if your - like staying or - what but if you leave we are taking our shit. Okay?"
"Who said I was going to leave?" He smirked packing up the items, " Maybe I want to stay with you two for a bit."
"Hold on there, you almost killed me twice-"
"But I fixed you up the first time and was trying to help the second," He interrupted.
" I get that, but I know nothing about you other than you were one of them and your helping us for no reason. "
" I know and I want to explain but not here," he looked around the cold room and got up from the floor, " That door is the way out I think."
" What time is it though, maybe we should stay the night because of the cold," I suggested.
"No its early and the place we need to go isn't too far," He picked up his bags and helped me up, " Lets get going before it freezes outside."
I helped Troy to his feet and zipped up his grey coat. My stomach howled and Jay looked at me awkwardly.
" I haven't eaten in a while," I laughed it off.
" Here," he handed me a bottle.
" What the hell is this?"
" It's just a spray-"
" I know what it is but I don't want it. Give me some of the real food."
" I - fine," He dug through the bag and tossed the bag of trail mix to me.
I opened the bag and aggressively ate it. We all walked out of the room and down the hall to the metal door that hit me last time. Jay pushed it open with force and the frostbitten air stung my face as if I had just been burned. I pulled Troy's hood up and Jay did the same. I adjusted my tuque and my sticky, blood stained hair flew over my face as the wind hit us.
