The "What ifs" of History

"Hey, Gardener, you can see the past, right?"

I inhaled. Today was not the right day to make conversation with an insufferable child. "Why do you want to know?" I asked.

She paused, leaning against the table she should have been cleaning. "I'm just curious. I mean, no one has really talked about the "What if" side of things. Like, what if the sinners hadn't been possessed? Or if Satieras-" she paused, sticking out her tongue as she tried to pronounce the word. Eventually, she just gave up. "If Venomania hadn't used the Venom Sword to stab himself?"

I stared at the waiter before me. For someone who didn't care about history, she seemed to be actually curious.

"Well, assuming Venomania was the start, if he had died, Banica, Kayo, and every of his other descendants would not have been born. I would not be. My brother would not have been born. Essentially, the world might have been better," I said.

That made Waiter lose it. She collapsed onto the table with laughter. "Oh! Oh, my god!" She wiped a tear away. "Sorry, that was funny for some reason. No offense." Her eyes shot towards mine.

With a sigh, I pulled two chairs over and sat down. She joined me in the other chair, sitting in front of me. There was something off in her expression. I had never seen her so serious before, not even when she was sick.

  "Keep going," she urged.

I smiled gently. I liked history. "Well, without Banica, the food in Beelzenia would not have improved. As for Riliane-" I made sure Waiter was fine before continuing, "She would have been a much better ruler."

Waiter tilted her head. "If I may ask, how so? Is it because Banica would not have possessed her?"

A snap echoed around the dinning room. I folded my hands in my lap once more. "Yes. Without Banica, Riliane would have been a nicer ruler....for some time. She still would have become corrupted by Prim, but it would have been interrupted soon after." I paused again, thinking.

"As for Margarita, nothing would have changed. Elluka would not have been stabbed, but that's only a minor detail. Kayo and her husband would not have existed. Kokutan would have met Rin, only to lose her two months later. Both Gallerian and Nemesis would have some minor differences, but-"

"Hold on," Waiter said. "Allen would have met Riliane again, that's what you said. So.....I could have been happy....."

   It wasn't a question.

Kai still would have set fire to a building, and the girl inside that building would have gotten her revenge. Her name was Myu, and she was even worse than Kayo. However, by Kayo owning the tailor shop, she was the one to kill the Mirokus, not Myu. Rin would have been killed after she came back from a different town. Not much would have changed.

I hurried on, not wanting to be the cause of her tears. "Nemesis would have fallen in love still, just not to Nyoze. Basically, her life would have played out the same, just with different people."

Waiter made a shocked face. "Wow, so much heartache all because of one bast**d. Geez."

I laughed quietly. "Yes, that's exactly what happened. Cherubim making that decision led to some of the most vital parts on history. It's amazing how one thing can change the world."

"Wait, if Gast didn't exist, what would happen to Allen? He helped him out, right?" Waiter was into this history lesson at this point. Our chores would not get down tonight. Very well.

"Allen still would have died. That was set in stone by the Gods." My words hung in the air. "On a different hand, Elluka would not have looked the way we've come to know her. Because Lukana wouldn't have been involved with Venomania, she would not need to give up her body. Elluka would have found a different host."

"Ew, host," Waiter muttered. "Still, huh. Venomania kinda ruined life. He's annoying."

"That's correct. I don't think anyone quite hates him as much as his descendants, but I could be wrong."

The girl in front of me yawned and hopped up. "Well, I'm going to bed. Thanks."

I stood up as well. "There's still more to know." It was late out.

The moon was glowing amongst the stars. Ah, the moon. It was a quiet, unassuming thing, always overshadowed by the sun. The bright and powerful sun. Only the moon could dull the sun, but it could never replace it. It would be lost by the brightness, not that was fine. One was more essential than the other.

Waiter stood up, yawning. "Let's keep talking tomorrow," she suggested with a kind smile. Then, she held out her hand to pull me up. For such a small girl, she had quite a bit of strength.

I smiled back. "Yes, let's. I know much more than what was written in history books."

She laughed. "I don't doubt that."
