Mournful singing

"Lu li la, lu li la, the song resounds...."

The ghostly singing was the opposite of music to my ears. All it did was make me grit my teeth and keep working on the flowers. It was Waiter, I knew it was Waiter. That annoying girl would be the death of me one of these days. It was just like her to sing in an eerie voice to unnerve me. If, by some chance it wasn't her, it had to have been the twins. This was something they'd do.

And yet, it was a solitary singer, with a mournful voice. That was what made me believe it was Waiter. She had that type of voice: sweet, soft, and so mournful. She would be good at singing at funerals.

Ah, that wasn't very nice, now, was it? Doesn't matter. I've been up since only god knows when, and I hadn't slept entirely well. That bloody singer made me mad with exhaustion.

Nevertheless, I straightened up and went to the next spot. The roses were withering away, and it was my job to take care of them. Originally, this had been one of Waiter's jobs, but since she had made me the Gardener, that task had fallen to me.

Speaking of Waiter, she was supposed to be out here with me. Yet, there was no sign of her. Skipping her chores again? That didn't surprise me one bit.

"Lu li la, lu li la, the song resounds....is a sorrowful song, painting in all of time. Look at the moon....in the sky....up so high...."

I shivered violently, and the bag I held shook as well. It was a girl singing, right? That couldn't be right, I was hearing two voices now. Whatever this was, it didn't sit right with me. It was definitely two kids, one boy and one girl. But Arte and Pollo weren't here right now. They were with their master, out getting more food.

Annoyed, I began to follow the voices. They took me to the shed where I kept my tools, then down to a large tree. Off in the corner of the forest was little house. As I looked at it, it started to flicker. Red and black lines pasted themselves onto the edges of the house, and the sky went red at times.

The house filled me with repulsion, and I tried to not vomit. Instead, I turned and rushed back to the Theatre, feeling ill. The sky seemed darker, angrier. It would storm soon. But it wasn't over yet. The minute I set foot on Theatre grounds, the singing returned.

This time, I headed straight towards the Theatre itself, knowing where I would go. Bursting through the main door, I stormed to Waiter's room.

"Waiter! I need to talk to you, right now!"

Flinging the door open, I gazed around for the capricious girl, but she was nowhere to be found. A bolt of fear shot through me. My heart began to pound so very fast. I stalked the halls, searching for the girl. This entire situation had set me on edge.

Finally, I heard faint murmurings coming from a room I must have passed. I twisted the doorknob, and saw.....Waiter?

She was polishing something, muttering to herself. Muttering about this injustice, the pain of polishing whatever was in here.

After a couple of enteral seconds, she glanced up. Her face paled. "G-Gardener? Wha-what are you doing here? I thought you were just in here." I froze.

Shaking my head, I met her gaze. "No....I thought you were singing outside. That wasn't you?" I asked, quite confused by this whole thing.

Waiter stood up, straightening her yellow ribbon. "I've been in here this whole time. Ask Court or Gear. I haven't left this room since morning." Her voice shook slightly. "Ma got annoyed with me, so I've been polishing all these....things."

I inhaled. What would Nemesis do? Probably go find whoever did that, right? She would take her beloved gun with her. That was a scary thought.

Walking in, I closed the distance I had to the girl.

"Lu li la, Lu li la, the song resounds....."

Waiter grabbed ahold of my long sleeves, clutching them for protection. Her face was pure white, as white as a lily. "What is that? Who is that?" I wrapped an arm around her, keeping her close to me.

Fierce wind howled around outside, the solitary window rattled in its frame. Waiter buried her face in my side, and I heard her start to cry. Rain pounded against the windows. She sobbed in fear. I held her to me, like a brother protecting his sister. This girl was now my sister.

"Lu li la, Lu li la, the song resounds....it's a sorrowful song, painting in all of time....look at the moon...in the sky....up so high....."

That was enough. We both dropped to the ground, huddling into each other. I felt Waiter's hands go to her yellow ribbon, toying with it. Her tears were hot against my skin. She dug into me. If she tried again, my bones would break.

The storm continued for hours. None of the other residents came to check on us. We were alone in this mess. Eventually, Waiter fell asleep, but I didn't let go. I would protect her at all costs.

It raged far too long to stay awake, and I felt myself lose consciousness. Maybe this meant something. Maybe....just maybe....I would know who Waiter truly was.
